I am using 3ds max 2009, to create my first charater model based off this tutorial: [Link to www.3dk.org]
I am using editable polygon mode. My problem is this: When I select any poly on my character an want to move it either in vertex mode or poly mode with the move tool, I can't simply move the selected poly without it stretching and warping the polys around it. I've noticed the affected polys that get stetched and warped when this happens are shown in the top, left, and front (2d) viewports in multiple colors...and when I de-select the poly that I'm trying to move the colored egdes go away. I'm trying to move the character's arm forward a little and when I select the polys of the outer edge of the arm and try to move the arm, the rest of the side of the body and shoulder are warped and stretched along with whatever part of the arm I move leaving my character looking mis0shapen and ruined. I'm a COMPLETE noob (as you all can tell) haha so I'm sure this is a very simple fix!! Thanks for helping!! ; )

If you want to move the arm forward you'll have to select all the polys in the arm otherwise, as you said, it will warp the ones that haven't been selected. You have to understand that all the polys are attached. You can't move one without affecting the others unless you detach it using the detach tool.

"multiple colors" "stretching and warping" sounds like soft selection is turned on, under editable polly. There's also a chance he's on "Local" mode in the reference coordinate system.

Duuuude!!! You guys rock!! Thanks soo much smile.gif Yep it was the pesky ass soft selection...(pesky in this case, yet I'm sure helpful in others) All I did was turn it off and the "colored grid" went away and my arm moves like I want it too now!! Thanks for the advice isaacg, and Gustave d'Pre. And btw, I checked out your portfolio d'pre, NICE WORK!! Amazing.
