Hey everyone, first post on these forums, hopefully first of many.

I have recently run into a rather major problem. I have as a (big) project for school to make a car (Saab 9000) in 3ds max. Well, I clearly underestimated the level of difficulty so now I'm in sortof a though spot.

I have the basic hull of the car done but the problem is there are small errors all over it, and no matter how much I try I can't seem to fix it! So I am pleading for you, as more experianced modelers, to help me.

I don't know how to host a file (or if it's even possible) on this site so I'm just adding a rapidshare link to the .3ds file, please have a look and drop me a comment on what I can do to fix it!
Don't expect a masterpiece like most of the projects I've seen on this website. This is pretty horrible. Just trying to save it so that it might become "decent".

I might add, this is like the 4.th time I started from the beginning, and time is simply running out on me.

Sincerely, Red.

I can't open the file. Are you using max 2009? Maybe just post a screenshot or a 3ds file.

Thanks for trying to take a look, yes I'm using max 2009, can I save it somehow in a format that you can open? I don't think pictures can really illustrate all the issues with this one... smile.gif

Maybe an .obj?

i checked it out.... the problem is you've contorted your mesh at all sorts of angles, and generally made a mess of it... sorry
although it does resemble a car shape, if you turn on edged faces you can see that there are hundreds of misshapen polygons, twisted at weird angles and stretched.... you've also deleted some parts of the mesh (for example above the tyre) and so there are holes in your mesh which you've not capped...
my suggestion would be instead of trying to tweak this to 'decent' levels, you should start from scratch....take a look at the 3dsmax tutorial on modelling an airplane ... that will be of help to you....and don't worry about time coz if you do it properly (with care) a low-poly car shouldn't take you more than half a day... worst case a day....
hope it helps

i'll take a look at it later, and post my opinion.

Edit:

Oky doky i took a look grin.gif, well your lines are all messed up, you should try and keep your lines going all along the whole chassis, at least main lines for basic shape, my advice is to try it again, it would take to much time to repair this model. Try not to add so much geometry when defining just a basic shape of the chassis, try to keep it simple as much as you can, also don't bother with the wheels, accessories and that kinda of stuff at this point.
You should firstly define the shape of the car, then refine the shape to resemble a car you try to model while keeping the mesh as simple as posible, mesh smooth will add much needed geometry later on...I usually model the chassis with the windows on it, then detail the shape as much as i can, when i finish the chassis detailing then i cut the doors, windows back lights and headlights out and refine them, wheels come last.
You should try this tutorial, i think you will learn a lot from it, i did grin.gif
I know, the car is not some Aston martin or something, but the techniques are all the same, no mather what car you try to model.

Thanks so much both of you. I'll take your advice and start from the beginning and I'll have a look at the tutorial you linked aswell, Altopais.

Let's hope I'll get a better result this time.

Right, made some progress. I did the entire chassi over again and I'm feeling alot better with this one. I have reached the point of adding details to the car, and the tutorial didnt really explain that well enough for me. How do I shape the details? Do I cut each and every line?

Yeh, you pretty much have to use the cut tools for a lot of the detail. To make it easier though, for things like indicators and door handles that stick out of the car, use a separate primitive and place them in the correct spot rather than cutting them into the mesh and extruding them out. You'll find this method a lot easier.

Also where ever you want a sharper lines you should do a small chamfer on that edge, smaller chamfer-sharper edge when you apply mesh smooth, you can also use a cut tool.

Here's a picture of an update for those interested. Still alot left for me to do - lots of vertex cleaning, and modeling still.

While not good - it looks a lot better then it did before, in my opinion.

Starting to look good man. Still some places to iron out the bumps, like the roof and bumpers. You got lumpy bumpers!

Thanks guys - no need to sugarcoat it for me though, happy about all the errors you can find.

About the headlights - you guys know of a good tutorial somewhere? It seems pretty difficult.

i like that, no need to sweet talk so i'll get right to the point, you should do some chamfers on front wheel arch, the curving should be little more sharper, also, correct those small bumps on the hood, and probably cut some more lines at the headlights to define the shape of the chassis around the headlights, and headlights them self, some cut and chamfer on front bumper, and it'll look much better.

sorry, i could not find a decent tutorial for the headlights, only this one, linked

Awesome - thanks.

About those bumps, what would be a good way to fix em, I've been trying to move vertex by vertex but it's not really doing it for me...
And yeah, I found that tutorial aswell but it's not at all the kind I need... Guess I'll have to experiment smile.gif

You could try the view align tool, but it doesn't work in all situations. Only when you want your verts to be perfectly straight and on cars they often follow curves.

hm don't know how view align would help if it's a curved surface, but it's a great tool, really usefull

It's been long since my last update, and it's still not finished, although I havent worked all that much on it, been busy getting my drivers license (got it yesterday, yay).
I just figured I'd add the latest render.

Lots of stuff still needs work especially the headlights but atleast it's starting to look like a car.

Yeh, there are a few things you need to straighten out around the back there but it's looking better than before. Lighting's good as well.
