HII BUDDIES, i´ve been busy lately because of school, but i´m getting in a big proyect for an image, first i tried with the loch ness monster, but, i decided to make something that really exist so i was watching the discovery channel, and i found this very peculiar animal, and i´m trying to make it, here i leave you some references and the head model finished.
I,ll update.

there are a few ones in Mexico, but they are sold as pets in the markets, it´s a shame

hey buddies, i was wondering if it will be better to map it using pelt
what do you think?

Pelt mapping works really well. especially if you want to hand paint textures in photoshop. If you have z-brush this kindof creature is crying for a good displacement map. I find texturing in zbrush to be the most pleasurable experience plus you can do displacements and normal maps using the same uvs. in fact doing both is probably the ideal situation. you can have your max uvs on mapping channel 2 and mix a few maps together. Of course if you havent used z-brush before theres a significant learning curve.
Another option is to map him procedurally. Ie: use procedural maps like noise and cellular. You could do things like use a falloff map set to towards away with the falloff direction set to world z-axis to mix two materials together. this would make one texture on the surfaces facing up and the other on the surfaces facing down
Then when all the mapping is done you can use render to texture and bake all the procedural maps into bitmaps using automatic flatten or use your pelt mapped uvs. if you used the pelt uvs in this way you could go and paint more detail into the maps and use the procedural stuff as a kind of base layer.
Hey Tyson, thanks for the file man¡¡¡¡
yea, i´m gonna detail further this model, but i don´t have Zbrush, i have mudbox, both are pretty much the same, the cellular maps are a good idea too.
I think i´m gonna use pelt mapping because i want to make the textures in photoshop, anyway, i´ve heard pretty good commetaries of texturing in Zbrush so i´ll try to get the program.
DAMN, sorry for the big space up, my mouse went crazy
