Hey all,
Wondering if anyone has made some really really good renders using max's standard scanline renderer?! Or if there are any cool tuts for this sorta thing! I really like the scanline renderer, and wanna see how far I can push it!! smile.gif I'll maybe post some stuff here when I get some hot looking renders...

I'll be interested to see your results! Probably do a bit of stuffing around with raytrace materials.

I dont use it at all, I am in love with Vray.

I'm sure you could get some pretty good results, it's just that it would take longer than it would with vray or brazil etc. It would be interesting to see what you could do.

I had always done Scanline rendering, but after playing with VRay material, I'm really starting to like it... It's taken me a while to get used to it.

It is tempting to do that. but you can't beat scanline for pure speed when your rendering stuff without GI. I just tried rendering 100 frames of black and compared the speed difference.

scanline got 9 seconds.

vray 3 minutes 20 seconds.

Wow, thats a massive difference. What happens to your vray materials though?

nah that test was literally just black. an empty scene.
I tried a sphere on a plane with a standard material.
scanline and light tracer with default settings still beat vray
on low with just an irradiance map and the skylight colour.
Its not very empirical. Vray comes into its own when you start doing complex scenes and animations. I don't think you can beat a cached irradiance map and light cache for a quick buzz free Gi animation.

Hehe! Thankfully being in the gaming industry I have not yet been exposed to the other renderers available!!! I will look at Vray one day, since everyone talks about it!!! grin.gif Must be good!!!, hehe!!

It is good. Not very useful when it comes to games though.

Anyone have any tuts or links to tuts for Advanced Materials (within the realms of Scanline?) Things like

- Multi-layered?
- Having Multiple Speculars?
- etc etc

Anything would be of interest!! grin.gif

No tutorials as such, but for mulitlayered materials have you tried the blend material or composite material? Do you mean multiple speculars at once, or changing speculars? For multiple speculars at once you could try a mix map. To change them over time... hmm, I'm sure it could be done, maybe a composite material and you could animate the mixing amount.

You should look into Negative IOR. That would be trippy.

If you mean multi layering as in DX/OGL multi layering you can do this with a mix map.

Speaking of shaders etc! Has anyone checked out the MapLayers Plugin?

It sounds like it has some pretty awesome potential!! grin.gif

Also, my work on scanline renders has taken a slight pause, coz I am now playing with viewport shaders... slightly more exciting right now wink.gif
