i'm kinda new with the world of 3D software and i was wondering if their is a simple way of doing this, and if so... is it something easy to explain to a novice?
you could try doing something like creating a cylinder with a few cap segments and loads of sides. convert it to editable poly and delete
everything except the top faces. then apply a noise modifier or if noise doesnt give the desired effect you could try a displace modifier and experiment with different procedural maps as the displacement.
