i never tried to script, but you can find in max's help files some nice scripts with explanation what each line do...also here's a tutorials page so check it out

what you can do is turn on the macro recorder under the maxscript drop down which records all your actions in max. then select maxscript listener. do your task such as "right click>convert to editable poly" then select the piece of code and drag it onto the toolbar. it will create a button that runs those commands again when you press it..
