I'm not new to 3DS, but i ran into a problem i've not seen before. Some of my scenes are quite large and detailed and need lots of textures. So in one scene i put all the scene materials into the library, then reset the material editor slots. Now all the presets in the Arch & Design mats are gone. leather, glass, ceramic, tiles, all of it. No matter what scene i try, or even a new one. Just POOF! gone. any thoughts? i did the same thing on my laptop and had the same result, so i know it's user error and not a bug. Help, please.

What happens when you click open? Do you see any of the libraries?

Do you have mental ray selected as your renderer?

although, upon further investigation, it looks as though when i choose open it only shows one arch_design template file. if i choose that it only comes up with one material, one that i saved into the library myself. is there any way to recover or get my hands on another template file?

yes, mental ray is always selected. that's always what i use. the options are listed in the arch & design drop-down tab, but no template loads.

I do also. BUT, the materialibraries folder in mydocuments/3dsmax/ is empty. i think that's where my problem may be. maybe i wiped it out?

What about the one in program files?

EDIT: Are you using 2008 also?

that's there. i have things like 3dsmax.mat, aectemplates.mat, 9 architectural.materials.mat files, nature.mat, and mrArch_DesignTemplates.mat. but if i open the mrArch_DesignTemplates.mat file in material editor, it's blank. the regular architectural presets are there, but not arch_design. weird that those are the only ones i lost.

yes i'm using 2008

i wonder if i was able to overwrite the template *.mat file with one intact, if that would work...

Strange that they are both gone. I'm puzzled, maybe someone else here can offer a solution.

EDIT: What happens when you open the one in program files?

when i open the one in program files, i only get one material. it's one that i hit the "put to library" button. that's it. is there a way to get another copy of that template file? maybe to overwrite it....

that might work. if you'd be willing my email is josh@tinmanstudio.com. it's that or i re-install 3ds completely...
