Hi , I am quite new at 3d max but have been modeling for years. I have recently discovered the render to texture feature which has attracted me to max as my models do NEED that soft shading...however upon import there is no smoothing, nor can I seem to add it,Ive tried turbo, smoothing groups and smoothing modifier...nothing,however when I create anything in Max smoothing happens instantly.Ideas?

Try the smooth modifier and tick the autosmooth box.

in editable poly select some polygons and go to polygon properties, hit a smoothing group button or you can use autosmooth by an angle threshold.

I am presuming you are mentioning the polygon properties side bar on the right after making it a editable poly from mesh,if so,Ive ticked and unticked and auto smoothed and just about tried all the options it has to offer in that bar, however if there is another properties meny that I am unaware of,please share its origins.

Sorry mate. I got that wording wrong, at least for max 2009, I havent got max 9 installed anymore but I think smoothing groups are under polygon properties in editable poly, however in max 2009, in editable poly when you have the polygon or element sub-object selected. its under
"polygon: smoothing groups". You need to select polygons and either press one of the buttons. or give the object automatic smoothing, make a selection and hit the autosmooth button. heres a pic.

the only other thing it might be is that all your vertices may not have been welded when you imported the object. If you select all the vertices and go to the weld settings button. then weld by a very small threshold. then try smoothing. You could also try adjusting some settings when you import.
there might be a weld checkbox or something depending on the format.

Not sure why it would get mangled up but one extra point. If anyone is using backpace to remove edges from your meshes you also need to remove the remaining vertices. you can do that in one step by holding ctrl when you press backspace. that was a new feature in max 8 I think. before that you used to have to select the edges then ctrl click to the vertex subobject. then go back to edges, use backspace then back to vertices (which are still selected) and press backspace again. If that makes sense. smile.gif

that's a good tip, it should be put in the shortcut/tips section! seriously i keep removing the edges, going back to vertex mode, and removing them...this is handy
