This is my first ever render, I've been using max for around 3weeks studying Vray quite intensively. I struggled with a few things, the light on the floor was so intense with the combination of shiny floor tiles and a high level of direct light, the white area in the lower right part of the shot looked quite bad so I had to photoshop as I didnt know how to make the floor less 'noisy' with the reflections. Also I think the wine glasses look like they're floating a little bit but I am really happy with it as my first! Feedback would be great! please do I really appreciate any comments and advice! Thanks again!

(edit for update: fresh render insert 30.09)

Its a very nice render. Usually to decrease noise, look for a control called Subdivs, dial that up.

Hey VarnishedOtter thanks, I am looking at the Subdivs setting at the mo, Irradiance map subdivs currently set at 70, and the light cache subdivs at 1000, further experimentation reqd I think! Thanks mate!

irradiance map subdivs are kind of like if each pixel reflected gi in a hemisphere the amount of rays in that hemisphere are the subdivs. it means GI will get into finer cracks. Light cache can actually be quite low. you can get away with 300 or 400.
or use quasi monte carlo. chances are the noise is coming from shadows if you are using vray lights or area shadows. increase the subdivs to say 30 for smooth shadows. or if you have any glossy reflections up the subdivs in the vray material.
If the noise is coming from the GI you can smooth out larger samples with the interp samples. it will interpolate or blur the samples together for smoother GI.

I like your render. pretty damn good for a first attempt. I wouldnt want to spill any wine on that couch.

*edit* now that I look closer it looks like you do have glossyness on the floor. thats probably what needs the subdivs cranked.

The first crit that comes to mind is the shape of the wine bottle, its not quite right unless maybe this is somesort of schnaps or congnac. also maybe try and use glossy reflections for the table and floor so its not such perfect clean reflection. just a thought.

in case you don't know. in a vray material if you make your glossyness below 1.0 you will get blurry reflections. if its at 0.0 your material is completely diffuse but still reflective. at 0.9 its very shiny with a specular highlight. something like 0.7 would give a shiny surface thats not quite shiny enough to see objects clearly in the reflection. but you need to have the subdivs at something like 25 to get good results. and its very slow.

wow thanks Tyson for the info, I am liking your direction with the glossy reflections for the table and floor, to enhance the realism of the scene, nice thought. Thanks for taking the time to cover those areas in more depth, there is so much to take in right now as a newbie to max, sometimes it seems easy to get lost in all of those vray settings and stare blankly at the screen! I will note your levels above and experiment and try more renders with what you mention, thanks again for the input I really appreciate the advice! Experimentation, Experimentation! : )

nice first render, niksta... maybe, in my opinion you must uncheck specular parameter ( in advanced effect parameter ) of the direct light and turn up subdivs... hope it help you

That's really good for your first render. You must be one of those annoying people who can pick things up really easily. wink.gif

sawat dee khrab! Nice render. good job so far. I would add some more detail to the floor and maybe lighten it up just a very bit.

Love the couch, really good job on the sun to! smile.gif

Nice image. The outside is under exposed imo. The sofa looks great, but you need more AO to ground some things, the lamp on the left for example.

thanks for all the c&c, really great! I've posted a camera angle render, and tried to tidy up the floor a little, it needs more work, but I think I have looked at it for too long already! (blind to the image, do you ever feel like that too?) I will come back to it after my next project...time for some inspiration! : )

Great to see you're working it some more. I think the environment needs more exposure. And I know what you mean by becoming blind, happens to me all the time.

thanks VarnishedOtter, I think we will have a look at the environment backdrop and boost the exposure now to see how this evolves : )
