hi guys. im new here. i really need help in my assignment. basically is a 1500-2000 word report on describe in full, the methos, techniques and keystages involved in the modelling, rigging and animation of a 3d character.
where the character created is of humanoid form, and must walk across a room before picking up a box. pleas if anyone knows help me!! desperate!!!
What subject is this for? I've never known anyone to write an essay on 3d modelling and animating.
What exactly are you after? If you want a general overview of the process, I suggest you hit google and start looking for tutorials. If it's more the theory behind it, that's a bit harder. If your tutor/teacher knows nothing about the subject, you could always make stuff up, but judging by the specific terms of the project I'd say that's not the case.
Don't forget to mention all the pre planning ie sketches, storyboards, clay models etc. That should give you a starting point... [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
i think he wants more of how you would create the character, and the methods i would use when creating this model. this i have no idea how to do?!!!?!!
wot would i need to type in google?
I'm a max user so all this is pretty much max specific but covering this subject in a non software specific way would give you more scope.
I would cover topics like polygon modelling techniques. Techniques like Box modelling and subdivision surfaces (meshsmooth). Discuss the different software that could be used such as Max, Maya, Lightwave, XSI, etc.. and how they differ.
cover UVW mapping and texturing, photoshop techniques and possibly deep paint and z-brush also.
Cover rigging tools like character studio, and character animators tool kit as quick rigging options and also discuss how you can build a custom rig using Max bones and
the skin modifier (vertex weighting and envelopes)
Discuss animation tools like keyframe interpolation, keyframing tools like setkey and autokey. and maybe even animation principles like pose-to-pose animation and straight ahead motion. You could write about traditional principles of animation and discuss how animators still need to apply them to 3d animation aswell.
I hope some of that helps, sounds like a fun essay to write. I could probably talk all day about this subject. As most of these guys would already know...
Yeah, I hope I don't come off as a know it all, After teaching the madacademy course for two years its hard not to ramble on with sometimes extraneous advice and facts about 3d.
I don't know how many times I have unsuccesfully tried to discuss the finer points of irradiance mapping or the importance of understanding compositing theory to regular people like my parents, I might as-well be speaking Portuguese.
hi all my names david craven, i just finished a foundation degree in game design using max, photoshop and flash, i like anime but suck at making it in max lol, im working on my portfolio at the moment but am having some difficulty in what to include in it other than max models if you wanna give me some advise you can check out the stuff iv done so far at [Link to shienli.deviantart.com]
although i gotta say most of the max stuff on there is pretty rubbish
any advise at all that people can give me would be great
anyways nice to meet you all hope i can be of help to some of the people on here too ^^
Welcome.
Your 3d work is basic but shows definately shows promise. The buggy is a good example of low poly modelling. Nice photos too. You won't have a shortage of backgrounds for your 3d scenes [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
You could talk about rigging characters for animations using bones systems or if you are using 3ds max you could also mention character studio. As for animation, you could talk about the 12 principles of animation, found here: [Link to www.animationtoolworks.com]
Also, if you can get your hands on this book from a library or something, it would be very heplful.
thx for the ego boost steve ^^ always nice
what kind of stuff should be included in a portfolio can anyone tell me where i can view one to try and get a basic template, or tell me what it is that developers like to see
I'd say work on making a wide variety of models, machines, buildings, guns, cars and some organic stuff. render a bunch of GI lit turntables. the max skylight (lightracer) will get good (but slow) results if you don't have vray. be tough on yourself and only include the strongest models. Perhaps show some texturing know how by going through the process of unwrapping and painting textures for a game character. show the texture maps aswell as the final model. show wireframes of your meshes. make sure they have good topology (edge loops and neat flowing polygons) perhaps make a game environment with some nice texturing, you could mask in the textured version over time so they can see the low res geometry suddenly look all detailed. There's a few Ideas, showreels are hard work, its probably better advice to just focus in on maiking great 3d for several months and then make a reel out of the best of it rather than thinking about what would look best on the reel. Good luck, your work is looking nice.
using my college computer with 3ds max /after effects and nuendo at home, been using max for a fair few years .I
still don't know half the buttons ect..but wow i love it so much . computers all day and nite over here,
even so,i still have silly little problems with things like browsers (firefox ect) prob's that make me look like i've only just started to learn about computers. but I also have wild ideas that make me seem like i'm from another time in the future or from some where far away a along time ago.
3ds max made me realise that anything is possible and always has been. It's just a matter of knowledge and desire.

Hi there. Chris is the name. I'm based out of Oslo, Norway. Started using 3DS Max only a few months ago, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of the basics... I started learning the program mainly to compliment my Webdesigning, but ended up realizing it's just folly limiting the experience such a prog can give you if you just go with the flow Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you guys and learn from you! I'll post one of my past works in the 3d finished section!
Hey guys, Scott R. Powers here. I have been working as a 3D animator/digital artist for about 10 years, 8 of which has been spent at the current production company I work for. I have been using 3D Studio since it was 3D Studio 4, before it was Max.
I have output of various commercials, animations, 3D visualizations, CD, and multimedia roms for several local and national companies. I was tasked with creating and maintaining the company's public image through print, design, media, events, and internet.
I have proven my qualifications on countless projects for major corporations like Radio Shack, Lockheed Martin, Sprint, RCA, Northrop Grumman and Chuck E. Cheese. I have been involved in almost every aspect of 3D animation, video, compositing, web design, special f/x and multimedia production design. Although I am not much of a programmer or script writer, I have done some in various projects.
I am currently ramping up to get back out in the job field. My current position no longer challenges me and I feel as though I am moving backwards not forwards with the current technology. I have converted my MySpace page into kind of a digital business card and am currently building an updated portfolio site. So if anyone had any advice for looking or getting a new job I'm all ears. Also if I can be of assistance to anyone else by all means let me know.
Welcome. It's always good to get new members with a bit (or a lot) of expereince. Most of our members are trying to break into a career in digital art or are still relatively new to the scene. Hopefully you can help us and we can help you.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
I am very new and from far. I teach Photoshop and some other things and interested very much in max from 2-3years. I like it very much. Sorry for my english. I need some advise how can I make work a workstation with 2 quad with 100% CPU rendering max. It gives only 13% so only a single core. Can somebody help me?
Hi all, I'm a old guy of 3ds Max user but I feel I'm still fresh in using it. I used 3ds R2 started from 1993, and now is using Max 9. Just update to 2008 few days ago. I'm also learning Vray since from early this year.
Perviously I'm worked with a design co. and major to create exteriors & interiors rendering, but now I changed to a office furniture co. and major to create furniture & office environment. It is much easier than interior and exterior.
Although I'm using 3ds & Max many years, but I really hate to create the model under Max. I would like to built the model under AutoCAD and convert to Max usually, because I'm fluent in using AutoCAD rather than Max. I also learning Vray start from the early of this year. I felt it save a lot of my time in light setting.
If you don't mind I hope I can share some of my experience and receive new update tech from here.
Thanks
Hello - my name is Greg Whitworth (thus my avatar), and I am just beginning in 3D Studio Max. I have played around with Blender for a few years and I love 3D - but I hate the UI on blender. I am a professional web designer in Wasilla, Alaska. I have a wife and 2 kids. I look forward to working with you guys here.
Hi All,
I am a newbie to visualizations and annimations. By trade I am a GIS'er (Geographic Information System Analyst). My comapny does some visualization and animations for engineering projects that need the visuals and annimations for public meetings.
I am getting involved becuase I have some interest and knowledge in modeling transporation networks (i.e. roadway intersections). Problem is I need to know how to do some very specific things in 3ds max, yet I only have been learning it for past few weeks.
I posted a question in the help/questions forum. If anyone has any insight on my question, I would greatly apprciate it!
I have created a dedicated forum for introductions now. Please post in there from now on.Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Hello to all. I'm just learning 3D Max, mainly in architectural rendering. I've used ArchiCAD but not satisfied with the final product so I'm switching. Any help, comments, suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Yep we should. Unfortunately there is no close thread function haha.
(shh. don't tell) I am working on MaxForum v2 in the test environment I'll add this function in there for the release of v2.Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.

Well myself and VarnishedOtter are the creators of this place and we are both web programmers so if you need some advice on that stuff feel free to ask. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Yep - and I do web design and development full time - so I think there are more then enough pro-s to try to come up with some type of W3C compatible solution.
Perhaps you can help us Beta MaxForum2. Its about 75% done. I use it to browse the forums now instead of the old code, because man it is sweet. So sleek and fast.
I promote you to member status, and you get access to a portfolio ... you can also add images after you have made a post. So if you look at a post you have made you will see reply edit image, If you click image you can add an image to your post. It may seem a little crazy at first but for wips that need to be continually updated it works quite well. Please read the FAQ on the home page if you have any more questions. It explains how to use the portfolio. Good to have you aboard look forward to seeing you work. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
If we can't close the thread can we rename it to the"Do not post in here anymore, there's a new section for introductions" thread?[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
