thanks guys. i need to lean how to do more with the textures and stuff. im only using presets still and i want to start using photos and doing all that stuff next. so much of 3ds i dont know about yet.

dont rush into using photos man unless you really need them to make something resemble a real-life scene...your katanas look pretty cool as they are....

I tend to agree. The katana is something you can do entirely procedurally as you have done. I'd start another project to learn about using photos as textures.

Ahh ok thanks mate. ill leave that for now then. that first render has had a few filters in photoshop by the way. looks a lil pixelated now. maybe i saved it wrong or something.

well that's the next step after max, photoshop can really add that something and make or brake the render

Looks good, though some of your images looks slightly out of focus, like DOF is off. Are you using mental ray?
I'd like to see the blade.

Yeah i was using Mental ray i think. No idea what DOF Is though? hehe i haven't made the blade yet. I think i'll do it now. thanks for the feedback smile.gif

DOF is Depth of Field. Technically its the area of your vision that is in focus. Anything in front of or behind the depth of field will be blurry. You don't normally notice it with your eyesight because your focus is constantly changing, but in a photo or image you see it. You learn about this when you do photography so it might be good to look up an SLR tute because they can explain it better than I can.

Heres an example in a photo, the first image has a shallow depth of field, where the second has a wide one.
