So I'm watching inside gaming yesterday at machinima and found myself quite irritated when they discussed a new game by Team "Bondy" called L.A "Nowhere".
Why it it so irritating when games jouralists, dudes who get paid to make a daily show all about gaming news fail to pronounce shit correctly. Ok maybe you havent heard of Bondi beach but surely the words film Noire have entered your scull at some point, right?. Man, is that a sign I'm getting old when I get pissed off when people mispronounce words?. Anyway. Has anyone got the game?. I was going to wait and play the witcher 2 this weekend but because I just bought a car I decided to go and grab it after work. Its really quite brilliant. so polished and very unique. I guess its kind of a mixture of heavy rain, GTA and classic adventure games. I was worried that not being able to draw your weapon unless the game lets you would be a problem but the way they've handled it is really good. everything just flows along. you can climb up ladders and open doors, chase down crooks and stuff all just by pushing in that direction. Compared to say the way the witcher 2 deals with obstacles its substantially more fluid, and compared to heavy rain it feels like you have alot more control over whats going on and where you are headed. If you're on the fence about buying this one just get it, unless you hate games that make you ponder. Supporting the Australian video games industry is another good reason smile.gif

It might come to PC eventually. It would work quite well with mouse and keyboard and the style suits a pc game.
Its got me totally hooked, ive been playing nearly all day and I'm not the slightest bit bored. I really thought that the slow nature of the investigations would get dull after a long session but Its perfectly paced to make you just want to keep playing. It may also help that I'm a huge sucker for crime dramas and the whole vibe of 1940s Noire, jazz and bakelite phones etc. is just a place I really like to be. If I could go to 1940s jazz clubs in my city I would get out alot more than I do, put it that way.

I'm not holding my breath for a PC release. Red Dead never made it to PC.

I do really want to explore this setting though. I dig the idea of being a hardboiled problem sleuth in a city of smooth jazz and hysterical dames to be rescued.

GTA IV didn't come out on PC until a year after the consoles so it may still happen. I'd like to see this one on PC too, even if it's just because it's a bit different to most of the games that come out these days.

The game won't come out for 3 reasons.

1.) it's made on a smaller budget than GTA and it was made by a subcontractor so the work involved in a port would probably be too much for the team and not financially worth it for rockstar.

2.) The controls would not port well to PC, you examine objects with the analog sticks and that is a massive part of the gameplay.

3.) The engine is so heavily optimized for consoles that it would be very difficult for them to realize the visual quality required for a pc game. For example GTA 4 on PC looked horrible because they used dithering and blurring for shadows for example.

Buying LA Noire does support the industry in Australia the sense that Team Bondi will be trusted to make future projects. But buying the game probably won't have a huge effect on Team Bondi financially. They will likely only receive a small percentage of the revenue. I could be wrong but most studios only receive about 4.5% royalties from the publisher after the development costs are covered. There is a major difference between independent developers and AAA developers.

you may be right, I have no clue how it works on the money side of things but if the game is a huge success it will almost certainly mean a sequel will be created. and if that happens the guys at team bondi will all be working on it again which is good news for people looking for work in Sydney. Still I'm not sure I would want to model 1940s cars everyday for 4 years, I'm sure they rotated those guys around environments but still. the first month would be cool but after that it could get ugly. I love the game but for the next one I'd like to play a sequel set in a more modern setting with different more complicated forensic mechanics, say one of those blue lights for checking for jizz stains, or dexter style blood spatter analysis, maybe a lab to go to and analyse samples and finger prints, a microscope?. For all its very good points I think there is stll a few areas that could be better. the story is so good and its a great fun experience but you dont really feel like your solving the crimes. you never really put the evidence together and come up with the suspect on your own. it all just sort of flows along. Id like to see them run with the idea and add complexity to it. make it a bit harder and make you think more to solve the crimes.(Armchair designing is the best wink.gif

You sure about that?

Just spent a couple of days at Krome in Brisbane and from talking to a few people there and I have to say that I'm pretty happy that I'm working in the mining industry rather than the gaming industry. Even if my stuff only gets seen by a bunch of blokes in a hole smile.gif

Yeah. I've heard about this too. Hearing this stuff makes me feel sad but at the same time I'm not that surprised. After working at a few studios and doing Saturday's and overtime for free it seems like it's pretty common. What makes it worse is if the boss is freaking arsehole. When I was offered that low end position at team bondi five years ago I was seriously conflicted about whether I should take it and I've wondered ever since if it was the right decision. Clearly it was. but it sucks to think that if your dream is to work in these industries on really cool stuff then you have to also sacrifice your life to do it.
