Good stuff Jas. Looks like you've been doing a lot more 2d than 3d lately. You looking to head down that way more with your career?

Thanks smile.gif yeah to be honest I don't know anymore. I think I might make the 2d girls into 3d at some stage (jungle girl, zombie sashi, etc) since I've basicaklly got concept art for them - but in terms of a career I am just going with what I think my strengths are. That was one thing I was frustrated with at AFTRS - no-one ever told me what I was good at (or if I was any good at all), and now I have a bunch of skills and no direction to head into. It would be a whole lot easier for me if someone went - 'your good at x you should focus on that'. I'm trying to get into more of the illustration/graphic design side of things too as there seems to be a healthier job market too - gotten a couple of interviews and such but nothing just yet. Hopefully the new year brings some new opportunities smile.gif I also applied for the RSP compositor training scheme, where they teach you roto and all that... so maybe something will happen there. In the meantime just making what I feel like to improve my skills.

Yeh, I know the feeling, having a bunch of skills but no real direction. I'm in a similar position - not so much 2d and 3d - but having a pretty good knowledge of a variety of software in different skill areas. It's not neccesarily a bad thing if you keep your skills at a reasonable level across as many areas as you can. You can use it to your advantage as most companies are looking for people who can handle a variey of jobs. On the other hand if you find you have a real passion for one particular aspect then I'd say pursue it and get really good at it.

If you want my humble opinion. photoshop/compositing seems to be the job description your reel is for.
It also seems to me that your greatest enjoyment comes from those areas. I'd focus on what you love to do most and then you'll get a job that you love and your career will move in the direction that you want it to and you wont look back and wish that you had put more effort into finding a job in that area.

you could for example land a job modelling cars for the next rockstar game and in 3 years you'll be a fully fledged car modelling virtuoso with plenty of opportunities to model cars in multiple countries or you could land a job at a tv station doing motion graphics for a different show everyday and have enough material on your reel to land you a job in any motion graphics position in the country. some people would hate the former option and other people would love it. I personally like some variety in my work and I would probably choose the motion graphics job. it really is a tricky job market out there.
I once turned down a really good job compositing at an architectural place purely because I knew I would be bored silly doing flythroughs.
I took a job doing animatics instead which gave me some extra perspective on animation but wasnt that great.
nowadays I animate and do a healthy amount of graphic design mainly with 3d elements. my boss is ramping up to do some stuff with realtime 3d next year which means learning a pipeline handed down from our Japanese parent company, not looking forward to that much but it will be something to keep life interesting at work.
