I was about to create a plumber game. I created several animations like walking, bending and running. I was wondering if I could have it in different layers then call these layers one by one in the game.

For the mean time, I separated these animations in different files. One animation per file. But I think this would consume time in the game proper.

Please help me with this. Thank you!

By the way I will be using the XNA game studio and the Visual C# Express.

It depends on how the engine is written. I haven't got any experience with XNA. I'm guessing its a 2d engine?

Last time I did 2d, I had everthing in separate files, keeps it more organized. Are you talking about layers in the game? Or in the image format, say how photoshop files have layers? Because I think you will be hard pressed to find an animation format that supports layers.

XNA supports 3D and 2D. I'm designing a 3D game. I'm talking about it as just like photoshop layers but each layers contains animations not just purely mage.

Anyway, if these layers of animations won't be allowed in 3Ds max, do you have any idea on how can i load the different animations consecutively?
