So, Its clearly been too long since I have said hello to you guys. I have been a disgraceful admin. Truth be told I went from being totally unemployed to working at four seperate studios as a digital retouch artist and working insanely stupid hours that shouldnt exist. Ahhhhh creative careers...

BUT... I'm really over it. Been seriously considering some other options and I was thinking of going to study at MAD maybe next year or the year after as a way of learning more skills, re kindling the old passion for "making cool stuff" and hopefully climbing further up the ladder in terms of what i can do.

I was wondering if you dudes could tell me much about it and what courses would rock if i wanted to learn 3d as a means of adding it to massive photographic compositions. I dunno just a thought at the moment. Is it worth it and what sort of experiances have you all had with learning there?

Cheers
Gee

p.s I miss you guys

Go to AFTRS, or do 3D at UniSA Magill (Not art school again) ...if I could do it again I probably wouldn't go to MAD, however having sasid that I wouldn't be where I am right now if I didn't go sooo.... guess it depends if you can afford 10k upfront or if you would rather do it through an accredited course. AFTRS grad cert in 3D animation applications are open until 1st week of November... so it might be a little late to apply (you need to write an essay and all this other stuff) but if you want to put in the hard work you can crash course in 3D, but it'll be tough. Seems that people who did 3D animation at Magill seem to have a fairly solid grounding, however I found out that the course co-ordinator/lecturer just died so I'm not sure who would be replacing him.

nope, you would be better off buying a nice new rig and investing in a bunch of gnomon dvds.

I disagree with jas, I would go to a private school over uni any day. Uni sucks at teaching you what is important for industry work. To be honest tho, you can learn most of the things yourself from tutorials online. There are a ton of video tutorials and books and videos you can buy. If you are interested in this let me know and ill point you in the right direction.

I had a good time at mad and I learned a lot, but that was because of Tyson and he isn't there anymore.

From what I've heard from talking to more recent MAD students, I wouldn't bother going there. It's very expensive and from what I've heard, some of the teachers they've had have been a bit sub par. I'm in the same boat as Jamie, in that I got a lot out of going there but that was purely down to Tyson. The rest of the people there were pretty useless.

funny as I'm still on the website 2 years later smile.gif when I was teaching there the two guys running the place just left the course to me, from day 1 they just said "go teach some stuff" I felt like I did ok at teaching usefull entry level 3d and some advanced things but it was a very badly managed company. they didnt really know anything about 3d themselves and to me i think its a major downside to have a company where the only actually skilled people are employees. I mean imagine a small law firm or a plastic surgery practice where the owners didnt understand or have law/medical degrees. My personal opinion if I was to go and study myself would be to maybe do a short course at a TAFE to get a kick start. I did a maya one here in sydney and it was good. they were certainly well equipt and had all the legal stuff organised. then just jump into some 3d buzz or digital tutors video tuts. ive been learning zbrush that way and its almost better than having a teacher as you can rewind pause and refresh any time of the day or night.

fantastic. Yeah I just got a new rig... well sort of... I got the core i5 last year, but bought a gtx480 graphics card this year... photoshop suddenly came alive like I never knew it could. SOOOO GOOD.

Ill definately try and look into a short course then. That sounds like a great plan. I know its going to be a long road but 3d seems to be where the digital retouch artists job is going these days. Why travel to paris to photograph it when it can be re modeled cheaper...

I really want to start my own retou8ching buisnes. the state of retouching here in adelade is atrocious. it makes me rage so hard. I

Please excuse my terrible spelling and typos,. im on my media pc and its proving to be hard to type from bed. three cheers for a lazy sunday! hahaha
