Sorry for all the questions but I have another one about animation! I have a scene where I need my character to walk onto a stage, take a bow and walk to somewhere else in the scene. How do I do this?

So far I used footsteps to make the character walk to where I wanted him to, then I converted to freeform to animate the bow, and now if I convert back to footsteps and add more footsteps to make him walk off, the bow gets messed up and doesnt actually animate, it just goes straight to the next load of footsteps. Changing where the footsteps start (end of footsteps or current frame) doesnt seem to affect anything.

footsteps are pretty much useless. probably not what you want to hear but for any decent animation you have to do it by hand. you can use motion mixer to loop a walk cycle but that opens up a can of worms too. the least technical way to work is just animate it straight ahead. it takes some time but thats what its all about. at least its not drawing each frame right? For steps in character studio you need to use a combination of planted and free keys. planted when they stick free in the air. moving the com forward.

haha yeah thats not what I wanted to hear frown.gif I dont think I have long enough to animate it all individually - I have about a week before it needs to be rendered, ideally. Any more than that is going to make me compromise my other uni subjects.

What are you getting evaluated on? Is it the animation, or can you get away with using motion capture?

heres a quick biped manual walk cycle if its any help. theres a max file and a .bip file. you could make a bow animation, save it to .bip and use motion mixer to blend from the walk to the bow and back to the walk.

We cant get away with using motion capture sadly. Dont have time to learn how to use it either frown.gif

I've been doing it with a combination of footsteps (since thats what we've been "taught" how to use and therefore I think they want that) and some freeform; it looks allright so far. Obviously far from perfect but I think its going to be good enough to get us a good mark.
