As you can see my airship project continues.

I have started to use a crudely drawn spline. I am wondering is there a way to make a spline like this kind of "bubble" out both ways, kind of like an extrude, but round? If not, is there a better way to make a rope? All I can think of is a really high vertical face count on a regular cylinder then repeatedly bending it. As a new user, I am never sure if my ideas are the slowest way or the only way.

Thanks

select your spline, go to modify panel, open up rendering tab and select "Enable in render" and "Enable in viewport" you can select what kind of shape do you want, rectangular or radial, also adjust thickness and so on...

Oh I see! so making a closed spline wasnt even part of it, its just a long string of spline that you can fill out to a 3d string. Very useful for the future thanks!

Yeah, a loft can give you some really interesting results. Example: You have three or four tiny circle splines and one long spline that follows the contour of the rope you want to make. Then you can loft the cricles up the spline and then in the loft modify tab there's an option for "twist." Play around with that and you'll get some nice looking rope.

Of course, the rope just has to be there, I doubt you'll ever have a scene where the rope of the focus. Just using a spline and enabling it to be rendered and then putting a "rope" material on it should be enough.
