Hi, I realy hope someone could help me out integrating a 3D object with a 2D image.

My scene is imitating a photo with a table on a floor, where I would like the sphere to cast shadow on the table and the floor, without the 3D box (representing the table) to cast shadow on the floor. I have used a matte/shadow material on the box (table) and on the plane (floor).

The problem is that I can't get the table (box) to "block out" some of the shadow from the sphere falling on to the floor, like it would do in the real world.

Have posted images of my scene under:
In the last image I would like the table (box- still with matte/shadow but without cast shadow) to "block out" some of the shadow from the sphere falling on to the floor, whitout the table (box) casting a shadow.

-How can I achieve this?

I scratched my head on this one a while yesterday and saw where you had posted it on other area of the internet without response. I've tried everything I could think of with no success. I guess one of the simpler things in my mind is, the plane that you are casting the larger shadow on, why don't you just move it forward, so only half of the shadow is cast on it. This should work fine in your comp.

Thanks for your time trying to solve my problem! smile.gif

Yes, to move the floor plane like you suggested can work for that scene.

If I want to create more complex scenes and integrate them with photos and film, maybe the use of matte/shadow material is not the way to go...?

Maybe if you render the shadow pass seperatley
you could match the shadows effect precisely to
the existing shadows in the live action
then the extra shadow on the floor should blend in
to the live action shadow.

Yeh this'd probably work. As an absolute last resort you could just hand paint it out of the alpha channel.

yeah, thats always an option, or an animated mask. Maybe you could post the actual shot you have to do, it might be easier to think of a compositing solution that way.

Have now posted my scene above (in my first message). Hope this could be helpful for solutions...

Honestly, I think it's going to be easiest to just manually erase the portion of the shadow you don't want in photoshop or something similar.

Looking at these the first thing that comes to mind is that the light source is coming from the windows behind and the shadows of the ball probably wouldnt be visible on the floor. They would probably be very blurred and elongated on the table too, quite indistinct due to the large area of the windows
