I've been using 3Dmax for years upon years, and I'm working on a fan film project at the moment. The issue is that I have a semi-heavy scene built for chapter 3 of the project. I can edit\modify it, move around the scene with ease, but if I hit play on even 100 frames of animation, it will error with an "out of memory" warning.

The scene is by far not the heaviest in faces that I've animated inside of. Is it possible specific objects can cause Max 8 to fire a memory error? Or is it possible that Max is having issues with that specific item and it errors for something other than memory, but it's telling me it's a memory problem in error?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Have you tested your RAM? Sometimes memory errors can lay dormant in your ram until you hit a specific sore spot. I had this happen with BF2. Everything else was fine, but I was getting memory errors on BF2, then I replaced the RAM and it all worked.
