Hey guys,

This is my first post here and I am hoping that someone here will be able to help me. I have 3ds max design 2009 and 2010 and I am using the integrated mentalray renderer to render. I just rendered the exact same scene with the same settings in both versions of max and realized the outputs look very different. I tried this with the car paint shader and SSSfast material. I difference was more pronounced with the sssfast material which looked nice and glossy with a polished wax kind of look in 2009 but looked dull and matte finished in 2010. I cant understand why there is such a huge difference between the two. I am really confused so I would be really grateful if someone would help explain this problem.

I havent tried the new version yet but there is often slight changes to the way materials, and settings etc..work from version to version. It quite strange sometimes, like with vray the ambient occlusion colours were swapped in a new release meaning you had to go in and flip them in every material that used the dirt map?? they must have had their reasons. Maybe try upping the shinyness value or making the specular colour brighter? You will generally have to rework scenes a little bit if you are upgrading to a massively overhauled version like 2010. if your renders HAVE to be identical you will need to use the earlier version I suppose.

hey guys i figured out the problem. In max 2010 you need to have the specular option checked under the light properties for the highlights to show up!! Thanks for the help anyway!
