For my first piece of 3d modelling and kinematics coursework at uni, I have to make a model of a mobile phone and then a 2nd model, of how it may have evolved to in 25 years time. Anyway I think I'm nearing completion for this, I want to make it look as realistic as possible. Any tips and criticism?

The only things left to do are sub-object materials (think I've figured that one out) and some boolean subtractions to create indents and a headphone jack..
Is this any good considering at the start of October this year I'd never used 3DSmax before? I havent seen what my classmates have been doing so I dont know what the standard is like for 2-3 months..

Thanks!

I could give you advice on pushing the detail, but i'm confident that you'll be getting good at modeling very soon. Keep on reading those tutorials! You'll be better than all of us soon!

Thanks for the kind words smile.gif

I basically learnt it all through the tutorials provided with 3dsmax haha, they're well done imo. The aeroplane one was easily the most helpful to me.

My only annoyance is not having the software to use at home in my own time, so I have to go and use it at uni instead, when I'd rather be in the comfort of my own home! Cant really afford a license either and I'd rather not support software piracy disbelief.gif

There's an educational version... :/

I wish there was a free to use full version for educational use of max. That means more 3dsmax users right? Doesn't make sense to me...

I'm surprised blender isn't the most used in games and film...

I think educational versions can be bought for cheap if your doing it at uni. I know we used to sell an educational license at Mad academy for students.

Thanks smile.gif I've updated it a bit today, with some sub-object material stuff, seemed to go ok. This may be the final render, though I need to align the buttons on the side a bit better.

The thing thats bothering me is the keypad, it doesnt look right somehow. Any ideas?

Not sure if the lighting is as good as it could be, either.

I would have shown the divisions between the plastic pieces on the keypad. Also it lacks grain in areas where you would expect some level of texture, even on it's smoothest parts. =15 min of work at the most.

Lighting is a secondary concern and the fun part. ("funner" part anyway) Worry about that later.

ok cheers, I'll try that. I guess thats just in the material editor, add some noise somewere?

I've played about with the lighting again and think it looks a bit better now..

Used the 3 point lighting with one overhead to light up the buttons a bit, seemed to make it look a lot more realistic and "deep"

Yeah, that's looking good. The lighting will do wonders.
