Hey all,

After a few simple flings with modeling I want to model my classic guitar as a practice... only to stumble upon a problem with the very first part - the body top.

I drew 2 splines - the body outline with a circular hole in it. Afterwards I want to turn on smoothing (nurms) so the edges will be perfectly rounded. How would I go about generating the geometry with appropriate topology so the hole stays intact instead of collapsing after applying an extrude or shell modifier?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Mike.

Can you post a screenshot of your mesh? It sounds like you might have odd size polys which can cause problems with smoothing.

Hey Steve, thanks for your response!
I would like to upload pics but figuring out how to upload & link it in this forum. (also x-posted that as a note in my introduction thread).

__ Nevermind - found out that PNGs don't work.

Anyway: here are the pics.

1) Splines (attached)
2) After
- Extrude
- Collapse All
- Convert to Poly
- Turn on NURMS

One of the reason (besides the pretty pic of my guitar in the end to look at) is that I'm trying to understand the principle of how geometry keeps a shape into place after smoothing (be it NURMS, Turbosmooth or even ZBrush later on)
I understand edgeloops (creases) now I think (although don't know how to apply them in every situation yet) but now stumbled on this.
Would it be necessary to redraw the topology (hope not, seems a lot of work for such a seemingly 'simple' action wink.gif ) And even so How do I know how much resolution to put in it and where to preserve the perfect round shapes?..

Try selecting the "edge" then click the "ring" command then used "Connect" the add 2 lines for top ang bottom part do this also in front and back for fine edges when your smoothing... grin.gif

Hope you understand what I mean.. i'ts kinda hard for me to explain.. Welcome to the forum..

Thanks for your reply jovanie - as I understand you're talking about edge-loops to keep the sharp edges or?

so that you can have a smooth edge if you apply a modifier meshsmooth or turbosmooth... grin.gif

Try cutting some edges from the hole to the edge of the guitar, ideally you should link up all the verts on the hole with verts around the outside of the guitar. Your topology won't be very pretty but the result should look ok.

Thx.
Yeah I was busy doing that but the vertice-count on the inner circle is less than the one of the outer shape - currently looking to increasing the circle vertice count..

Okay hooray! figured it out grin.gif

I thought about sharing the process so that others could also possibly learn from it. Or others can comment and provide different (better/quicker) ways.
Is there a way to create a post in a 'tutorial style' - integrate pictures in between text? (as opposed to having the pictures separate from the text at the bottom?)

if I were to make a tutorial on that one.. I'd rather use splines much easier for me... before that I'll look for reference for my guide grin.gif
check out the tutorial section... I think it has.. or you ask some mods grin.gif

nice... good job...

I started out with splines which I drew on the pictures I took of my guitar (I lined up front & side view in Ps). However after that I have to generate clean geometry to be able to use smoothing and still be able to apply edge loops etc. to control the smoothing (how much I want in what place).

I just thought that I could share while I found out what (either right/wrong) so that it would become a more interactive process for all. People are then able to give reactions on the described steps and give comment while the whole progresses.
When I started out with this and thought it over, it looks pretty simple. But there are some things I run into and it's harder than I thought. Once I get the basic principle of how to build clean geometry which keeps the shape into place when smoothing it will progress more fast I reckon.

One of the principles:
Quads seem to produce more evenly smooth results as opposed to triangles. So one of the things I have to learn is how to generate (preferrebly by max as in my front-plate example, but if not possible by hand) quad geometry. In that I have to learn for what type of shape I have put the least amount of geometry where..

I will look in the tutorial section like you suggested ofcourse - thanks for the tip; still a lot to explore in the site smile.gif

Yeh, post up your process here if you like:

Thanks again Steve
However it feels more like a work-in progress at this moment combined with the fact that I'm still in the early stages of learning this stuff.
I first would like to get some feedback on the process - big chances are there are different 'smarter' / more optimized ways, which is one of my learning goals.

That's why I don't feel to share this as a tutorial yet.

That's why my thought was to post my process in this thread to establish this interaction. But it doesn't seem possible to have inline images (or links so I can inline-link to a page describing the steps) in between text or is there? If not then I will write up the steps an refer to the images by numbers.
