Ok I know this is about as boring as asking what kind of microwave or toaster I should buy but never the less
I have been trying in vain to find a really good modem/router to replace my current one. All my research leads me to
conflicting reviews and when I think Ive finally found the right one it turns out to be just a router and not a modem/router combo.
What I want is a good reliable ADSL2+ modem, reliable and fast wifi with at least 15 meters of solid coverage and at least 3 fast ethernet ports possibly gigabit ports if that makes any difference. Anyone got some advice on this field of technology? some solid models that I can trust not to drop out all time? I have no idea and prior to this 2 year old netgear unit I remember being burned by 3 or more products that didnt work right.

Umm basically they are all a bit same old same old really, just dont buy netgear, that is my advice. Every netgear moden/router ive had has had connection problems when looking up servers in-game (games like cod4 and counterstrike). The connection fails for about 5 mins after looking up servers.
It is ok, I wouldn't talk to me either...

Thanks man, yeah its a bit dull but Ive just had bad luck in the past, I hate having to take shit back to places like JB hifi and have them question my intelligence. "did you try turning on the power button?" or "maybe its your ISP?" anyway, Just this minute I bit the bullet and bought one online. a Billion 7800N its got wireless N, gigabit ethernet ports and a whole lot of crap I dont understand something about annex M for faster uploads. fingers crossed it just happens to play nice with the million different variables in my location.

Oh man one time I took my router back because I forgot to check the box to see if it had a built in modem. Then swapped it and picked up a box that was just a router without the modem again LOL had to go in 5 mins later and get it swapped again... I felt so stupid >.<

well, I can varify that the Billion 7800N is in fact a very good modem/router. My adsl speed has increased significantly and as expected the wifi speed and stability is very good aswell. recommended for anyone else who is shopping for a new modem/router.

I guess thats got alot to do with where you are and what the infrastructure is like down there, according to whirlpool forums the best choices are Internode or Netspace. I know that internode has a generally good rep here but I'm with TPG due to the huge download limit. I sometimes wonder if I might get even better speeds with another provider but what good is very high speeds if you max out your quota in just a few days and get throttled.

That sucks man. Ive been experiencing drop outs for weeks and suspected TPG was responsible at first but it seems it was my aging router and not TPG's fault afterall. I guess you've tried different hardware already?

Yeah tired 3 routers now. I have tired countless time to replicate the problem myself, in the end I think it just comes down the the exchange and poor infrastructure in tassie.

I've been using a Belkin wireless router for years no problems. It doesn't have a modem in it though.

At work we use Billion routers and Linksys switches.
