Hi everyone just a quick question does asnyone know how to mold 2 different objects together to make 1.

This is what i have done e.g. i have got a cylinder and i want to add a box to the middle. What i did was deleted the top of the cylinder where i wanted the box to be, then used the connect in the compound objects and it does not seem right because there is nothing that happens the only thing it does is changes it to the change colour.

Thanks in advance

The best way is to convert the cylinder to an editable poly and use the attach function to attach the box so it becomes 1 object. That's the easy part. If you're not going to use turbosmooth you can probably leave it as is, but otherwise you're going to have to cut holes into both elements and either collapse vertices or use the bridge or weld tools so that the 2 objects actually become 1.

I agree with Steve. Can you post a picture? It may be easier to just put a "Poly Modifier" on the box, Chamfer the edges of the box, extrude a couple of polys for the cylinder and add a turbo smooth.

Actually yeh, that probably would be easier. Then you don't have to worry about making sure all the holes have the right number of edges.

Try this:

Step 1: Create a box with segmented lines. Your lines may vary for the size of cylinder you are going for.

Step 2: Add an "Edit Poly" modifier and extrude one or both side of your box in the size you want your cylinder to be.

Step 3: Go to the "top" viewport and adjust the vert's to look like a basic circle.

Step 4: Select all of the edge that you want to keep sharp.

Step 5: Chamfer those edges.

Step 6: Add a "TurboSmooth" Modifier with maybe 2 iterations.

I hope this help you. Good luck with your modeling.

One thing I forgot to mention, if you notice in the final render, there is a little pinching where the box meets the cylinder. When you create the chamfer, you need to go back and fix the triangles that it make. See the final picture with the triangle welded.

Yeah nice one rick.

So to fix the tri's you're sayin just to weld the bottom two verts right?

I dunno, dpre sounds kind of sophisticated. Especially when you add an apostrophe and a French sounding first name such as Gustave d'Pre

Hope it helps Scott. I'm thinking I should have had a domain named 3D_Doodler.com or Jack-Of-All-Trades-Master-Of-None.com......lol
