I went to the movies last night and it left me wondering if there are any original thinkers left in Hollywood. The trailers we saw were the Fantastic 4 sequel, spiderman 3, Transformers, and Rocky - all sequels or based on something that's already been done. Plus all the other sequels coming out soon; Pirates of the Caribean and Shrek etc, there's just not that much new stuff coming out. I'm wondering if there'll ever be an original big budget movie ever again.
We saw the Tenacious D movie by the way, quiet funny and disturbing in parts. [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
I'm a big fan of MARVEL, so I'm very happy to see the cinematic interpretations taking flight (even if they do deviate from the comics severely at times). And, personally, I thought Batman Begins was an absolutely awesome adaptation to a DC classic (although it got a little convoluted near the end). Also, look out for advertisements of `The Dark Knight' due out in 2008. And who isn't going to go see the Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies? OK... maybe I'll save the latter for DVD. However, I can sympathise with those whose juices don't start flowing over such things.
So I do agree with you, Steve. Even those that appear to be original, such as Pan's Labyrinth, say, smell a little bit like older movies such as Labyrinth (starring David Bowie in those wonderfully tight tights). Although, having not seen it yet, I can't make a proper judgment. And what's up with those magician movies: The Illusionist and The Prestige? They essentially came out at the same time and look ridiculously similar...
I think the main culprit here is the bottom line. As long as these sequels keep selling (regardless of quality, which I personally think can be quite high) then I can't see the trend changing, save for a paradigm shift from a real pearler of an original idea.
... or did you think I was too stupid to know what a yoogoogoly was?
I can't say that TMNT was high on my list but the Transformers trailer looked pretty good. Ghost Rider is another one that looks interesting, but that might just be the special effects.
You're right about the bottom line. Despite how unoriginal all these movies are people will still go and see them. I guess it's too scary too go and see something new.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
There is very little originality left in hollywood. a while back i found a list of 50 - 100 movies that were coming out in 2007 probably 60% were remakes or sequels and the remainder were probably romantic comedies. If you can, look to the independent film makers or foreign films for originality.
What really gets me is horror remakes. Horror is kind of my guilty pleasure, especially 70's grindhouse horror flicks. Way too many of these hardcore violent horror flicks from the past are being remade into watered down crap to be more mainstream and attract and a teenage audience. it drives me nuts.
I'm biased in against the transformers movie. It looks like a brainless and fun action movie, but its just not the same transformers i grew up with.
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.
Yeah, the transformers flick appears to be jumping on the pseudo-noir bandwagon, like the way Batman Begins was much darker than the others, and how Spidey 3 will be `the darkest chapter in Marvel history' or some schpiel like that. I reckon it's just a pop culture issue. If they made the movie just the way the cartoon was, then everyone would think it's uber retro. It'd probably go down very well with our generation who grew up on it, but would probably miss the bottom line all together. Young kids these days have no respect... no respect.

how bout 300? shot entirely on green screen. Storyline looks to be good aswell. Trailer looks awsome. Shame it aint out in uk yet tho
i was gonna put a custom avatar but damn! that teapot render rocks my co..*ahem* world
I find the Ghostrider trailer to be a little bland and unappetizing but I never was exposed to the franchise to begin with. I do agree that many films seems to be jumping on what you label the 'psuedo -noir bandwagon'. With all the exposure that global problems have in the news today and the popularity found in the noir undertones of movies such as the Matrix, you can hardly be suprised. Looking forward to 300 greatly. The trailer looks quite epic and interesting.
Like this giant fish in a bear suit. He would be horrible. Look at him go!!
I know this is an old topic, and long time no one posted any replys, but as I read it, I foud it as interested one.
Well, how can there be any original story, when all the good comics (as MARVELs) are allready filmed, and I guess all we can do is wait for another one
I can't wait to see Ironman I saw trailer and it looks pretty awsome, kinda reminds me on Hulk. I never actually liked spiderman movies, and neither Fantastic 4. I actually find fantastic 4 one of the worse MARVELs comic story, its too childish I guess.
And also, 300 is a great movie to me, I only hate how they did all the blood and stuff, like, blood disapears before it touched the ground -.- it's pathetic a little bit, since the whole movie is so great. But the actors did a great job, and also, when I think that all movie was filmed in studio, I can't say anything but: Great movie!
I also liked transformers a lot, I watched the cartoon when I was a kid (who hasn't...) so I was so excited while I was watching the movie. It's great!
I'm sorry if I'm bringing an old topic to live again, but I'm also a huge fan of Marvel, and I really like most of those super-hero stuff (whether we're talking about films or comics), so, I'd like this topic to stay alive
There are two wolves fighting in every man's heart: one is Love, the other one is Hate. Wich one wins?

I like all the super hero stuff too but I wish they would make them a bit darker and more mature. I'm keen to see the next batman movie. I'm betting the fact that Heath Leger is dead will probably boost its box office potential... I think they are working on a new heavymetal movie based on the comics. the last two kinda sucked though.
Batman Begins might just be the best superhero film ever made...
Its approach was realistic, dark, and not mainstream.
I wish they won't put a robin in the next sequels, i like batman as a solo guy.
Robin seems like some kid who wants to be here just to pick up some chicks
like: "hey, I'm a hero too.... wanna make out a little??"
lol
anyway, I agree batman could be a great movie...

The robin character just messes things up, its all too chummy. Batman from the comics is this dark heavy dude. They should make a batman versus superman movie and make superman a bit darker too. the comics had some great artwork.
I'm not sure what people thought of the latest superman film but it wasnt anywhere near as good a christian bale in Batman begins.
While where at it I want to see an "ALIEN" 5 movie where we get to see the alien home world and find out if they really are a bio-weapon created by some insideously intelligent alien species. or was it the predators who invented them???
I don't think aliens and predators have anything incomon (except the movie was made later), like freddy and Jason don't have anything incomon.
The artist who invented aliens is H. R. Giger. So he hasn't created only the concept of that creature, but almost the whole story about them (not the film story).
But, hey, who knows, maybe they will make a story where Predators had somethig to do with them and how the were created. (I don't mean the AVP movie again)
Gigier's style of making characters is bio-mechanical (as we can say from Alien, or Species, that he also made). But has also a morbid way of showing characters.

OMG, I screwed somethig up! Admins please delete the last 3 posts and this one too.
Sorry

Well, yeah Giger and Ridley Scott did start the ball rolling but we are talking about fantasy here, its kindof arbitrary, whose to say what happens except the next writer to secure the rights to the franchise. I guess the whole alien story is kept "true" only in the quadrilogy and the lineup of directors there is pretty awesome.
Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean Pierre Juenet.
I'd like to see Ridley scott and Giger team up and get some decent writer like maybe Joss whedon (Not sure about writers to be honest) and do an alien 5 that goes back to the roots of the original tale.
Yeah, I agree. Giger has nothing to do with the story anymore. I'd like to see Alien 5 as a chapter that will introduce the begining of whole Alien story to us, and show us some more...
I expected that from Alien vs. Predator II, but... the only thing that's new is some new accessory stuff of Predator, and the "Predalien" creature which is good, but I guess I expected more from it... However it's a good movie to me... (Except the end totally sucks OMG)
