Explain.
Are those 3d objects from your max file or is that image something the Rotary Club made?

it a 3d made in 3ds max... i was wondering how to make them a real object.. that i can put one gear to another one w/o looking if they are over lapping with each other

here's a crappy video i made a while back with gears. Is this what you're trying to accomplish?

Those cogs were flying away! I'm pretty sure with the inertia they built up they should have flown off tongue.gif

Well you'd probably be able to do it with rigid bodies in reactor, but it would be easier to fake it and just animate them spinning so that it looks like each cog is being driven by the preceding one.

No, I meant that you should animate the cogs spinning.

Just animate them by hand like gustave suggests. way easier, unless you want to try and figure out expression controller or wire parameters which would make them all work like real cogs driving each other.

That's getting pretty advanced and may explode your mind, however.

Houdini is a great program to do that sort of animation in seconds without having to keyframe anything.. But.. it's not the sort of program you learn in a day, and/or user friendly, I took a class on it, and it's still hard hahaha.. Keyframing is the best way, and the quickest way I would know to do this.

yeah Ive often wondered about houdini, I hear its very non linear, never tried it.

wire parameters are actually pretty easy, just right click and connect the parameters.

Here are the steps as explained in the 3d max reference..

To use an expression with wire parameters:

Create a box and a sphere in your scene.

Right-click the box, and from the quad menu choose Transform quadrant > Wire Parameters.

From the pop-up menu, choose Object (Box) > Length.

Click the sphere and choose Transform > Position > Z Position from the pop-up menu.

The position of the sphere and the length of the box are now wired.

In the Parameter Wiring dialog, create a one-way wire by selecting the arrow pointing toward the box’s Tree View.

Type abs( before Z_position, followed by a closing parenthesis, ), in the expression text box for Box01, so that the entire expressions is abs(Z_Position).

Click Connect.

Move the sphere upward along the Z axis in the viewport.

Note that as the sphere moves in the viewport, the length of the box changes. Using abs() ensures that the box never has a negative length.

To control several slave parameters from one master parameter:

Open the Parameter Wiring dialog.

Choose the master parameter in the tree view.

Choose the first slave parameter in the other tree view.

Click the arrow pointing toward the slave parameter.

Enter the desired relationship expression in the expression text box.

Click Connect.

Keeping the master parameter selected, choose another slave parameter from the tree view.

Click the arrow pointing toward the slave parameter.

Enter the desired relationship expression in the expression text box.

Click Connect.

You can repeat this cycle to set up as many slaves as you want. The result is a “fan” of parameter wires, so that you can control all of the slave parameters at once as you change the master parameter.

Yeah, I used to print out ten pages at a time and read it on the train. I remember it was like reading a book of spells for me when I first started max.

haha... I took 3 programing classes.. houdini, python and mel scripting for maya, and renderman... first I dont remember a thing from those classes.. second, my stuff wasnt as good as the brains in the class... third, I remember looking at those things gave me a headache... I concluded that scripting is not for me.
