hey i don't know how to do the mouth part for my snowman. i want just a simple mouth . don't have to be very perfect. as long as it won't look too weird on the snowman. can anyone teach?

So you want a rigged mouth for animation? Maybe you could create a simple mouth from a torus primitive and have it stuck on the front of your snowman.

start with a torus and convert it to editable poly.
then move vertices around using soft selection.
add a bend modifier to curve the lips around the face a bit.
then you can animate the lips shape by using the morpher modifier.
copy the lips shape several times and change the copies to look like different facial expressions.
add a morpher modifier to the original and then add the copies as morph targets by right clicking in the available slots and picking them from the scene, you can just delete them after they have been loaded into morpher.

Is that kind of what you meant? there are several ways I could suggest but this is the easiest one. the rig in your link would be slightly more difficult to set up and probably not so great for animation anyway. Morpher is generally alot easier to deal with compared to bones based facial rigs. you could do a similar thing by extruding a mouth into the snowmans head and creating morph targets from the head object. Hope that helps. smile.gif

i was thinking of doing the mouth without lips. the snowman's mouth is going to be small. which means its not gonna stuck in front of the snowman. i really don't know how to explain it.

i'm afraid the snowman's gonna look ugly with torus. i guess i'll try first. thanks anyway =)

fair enough, like I say you could apply the morpher method to the entire head, and model the mouth into the front, maybe something like this.

ok, so heres a very simple way to begin.

1.start with a low res sphere, mine had 12 segments.
2. right click and convert to editable poly.
3. select a few polygons and use the inset tool to create some more polygons out of the selection.
4. select an edge and use the ring command to select all the parallel edges around the sphere.
5. use the connect command to add an extra loop through the ring selection.
6. move the corners out and adjust the position of the vertices to resemble a mouth.
7. pick the polygons on the inside of the mouth shape and use extrude to make the mouth go in.
8. when you are done add a turbosmooth on top to smooth it all out.

The best thing to do would be to watch some tutorial videos on how to use editable poly to get a good grasp on all the tools at your disposal.
hope this helps. And don't feel bad that I can do this stuff pretty quick. Its my job and Ive been doing it for a long time, its great you are setting yourself goals and learning how to model in max. looking forward to seeing your finished snowman. feel free to ask all the questions you need to. smile.gif

you copy the head object several times. and change the copies into different mouth shapes such as closed lips.
ohh. ahh. etc etc.. then add morpher modifier to the original head. you then right click on the channels in morpher and pick the copies from the scene. you then have spinners that morph to each shape. you can have mixtures of expressions such as smile and open etc..
this is the most common method of facial animation in pretty much all the major animation programs. in Maya they are called blend shapes and xsi has something called shape manager.
