Definitely 3DSMAX (now ver. 2009)! It's been my favourite since ver. 4.2, but I have Maya 2009 too, if necessary.
About renderer, I feel at ease with mental ray, but it seems most of you prefer way more VRay....prolly because of realistic materials(?) >.<
I've been using mr for years, now, and would be a bit frustrating discovering VRay is better....but dont lie to me, is it!? =(

Welcome. You can achieve good results with any of the major renderers and programs. Some are stronger in some areas than others but it really comes down to how well you know it and what you need it to do. It is true that vray is awesome though.

From what I've seen and read you can achieve similarly good results with either, but workflow with Vray is a lot more streamlined, and getting the same results with vray takes less time and effort, but if you've been using MR for a lot of years you're probably pretty adept. I've been using MR mostly, have played about with Vray, and would like to learn, but MR is awesome in its own right.

Welcome to the forums man.
