My name is Sarah Wiltshire. I'm a beginner in modeling and intermediate in texturing. I've been doing 2D sketching all my life, but I don't have any formal education in art. I have done a little in the game: Oblivion, but I haven't released any models mods yet because I'm having some trouble rigging. I just need to get some tutorials done and get going. I am taking a year off from college to see what I can accomplish and get hired as a Character Artist. It's going to be a lot of work, but it's my only chance to fight for my dreams. I hope to do a lot of work here, get a lot of advice, participate in any group projects, and strive to be the best I can.

My goal: In one year have enough experience to get a job either work on the next Elder Scrolls game or train with the pros in another company, maybe some sort of internship.

:3 Anyway, it's nice to meet you all and I hope we get along great!

I totally agree with the take a year off idea. I don't think I learnt anything about 3d when I studied electronic media, We had a joke of teacher, 60+ with a doctorate in Bryce (as in she got her doctorate by creating extremely large format landscapes in bryce that looked somewhat like the default mountain repeated several times in every example). can you believe that shit? she used to mark me down for submitting work done in Max saying in a feeble crony type of voice "did you do it in Bryce!!?"
made some good friends tho and some very bad short films then took time off to learn 3d.
Thats a great goal good luck. look forward to seeing some of your work on the "new" forum V3 is very exciting indeed smile.gif

I'm actually getting a degree in Management Information Systems as a backup, so it has absolutely nothing to do with character design. I have until Jan 5th to decide whether I finish the degree first or work on the design first.

Do degrees in art hold much weight when applying for a character design job?

I traditional art background is something that a lot of places look for. It is not by any means a requirement but they do like to see that you have some life drawing skills and a solid understanding of human and I guess animal anatomy. Some places even make there employees attend a weekly life drawing class.

I would say if you want to be good in general you should attend some life drawing classes, it's great fun and you learn a lot. I often see demo reels that have a few figures study's towards the end.

I think having a degree in something looks good on the resume but its going to be you're reel that lands you a job.

If you were trying to get into the software end of things then having a degree would help alot in landing a graduate position but for character design they will just want to see examples of really impressive work in you're portfolio. At least thats what its like here. Thats not to say that studying art isnt a good idea because I think that doing a good practical arts or design course can take you to a new level of skill and expose you to loads of things. Plus you're management degree would probably help if you have aspirations of becoming an art director or a producer and its probably worth finishing it if you're already near the end, just keep drawing in all you're lectures wink.gif.

Welcome to the forum, hope you get something out of it. I've been mucking around with TES CS and nifskope recently trying to get an idea of how it all works. I'd be interested to see any of your work.
