Well this is my first attempt at anything in Maya, and let me tell you it has been a long and frustrating process. So far I'm not a massive fan of Maya's modelling tools, though this maybe just because I'm used to something else. There are a few things that max does that maya doesn't do or doesn't do as well. Anyway, here's the result of 2 days of hair pulling and frustration, and I'm still not all that happy with it. Obviously there's more to be done, but there are also a few little bumps and things that need ironing out and no - I don't know why that one button looks different, they all have the same material. I'm hoping the other tools in maya are better than the modeling ones... [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Nice model, own a sony ericsson do we? Hehe, very smooth though. I do have to ask whats with one of the buttons tho? Never touched Maya so I dont know how hard it is
~=~ Whoever said nothing is impossible never tried pushing a revolving door ~=~
That's a bit of a worry, it's actually a Nokia. I think I need to round off the edges a bit more. One of the annoying things I've found with Maya is when you update the options in say the bevel or chamfer window, it doesn't update in the viewport. So you basically have to pick a value, click ok, check to see if it looks ok, and if it's not you have to undo, open up the options window and do it all over again until you get it right. And as I mentioned before, I don't know what the deal is with that button, and as it now seems that the file is crashing every time I open it, I may not ever know. Stay tuned for developments.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
well it looks pretty good to me. Seems like an odd choice of subject for a first model. I think I'd be feeling pretty frustrated building that sort of specific detail in any package.
A good challenge though I guess. you could do a mock sony commercial for your reel.
Ha! Yeh, I was looking around the room for something I could model that wasn't going to be too difficult. In hindsight maybe the phone wasn't the best idea.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
nice model Gerard, i use maya for a while and i think modeling workflow is very similar to 3ds max, but for me is more easy to access tools in Max,.
Everything has some beauty but not everyone is able to see it (Confucius)
gr8 work... Steve. I downloaded a trial version of Maya form Autodesk's website but haven't used it till now. well, i have heard that Maya is better than 3ds max & also the render (output) quality is much better than 3ds max. I tried some tuts. on Maya frm the net but didn't follow them and also found it difficult , so left it. Will try sometime later.
Well considering they both have the same renderer as standard the output "quality" should be the same right? mental ray vs mental ray. mental ray wins everytime
I actually found the default settings on the maya renderer to be pretty rubbish, much more than the max renderer. There were jagged lines everywhere. It's not problem to up the antialiasing levels but it seems odd that the default settings would be so low.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Yeah the Maya software renderer has nothing on max's scanline. Mental ray is the same as far as I can tell. and vray is quite differently implemented (not as good in Maya). Maxwell is Identical mainly because it runs as a standalone renderer that launches when you hit render and all the settings are the same pretty much.

There are more people using it in the world. I'm worried this could hurt my chances in getting a job.
But that's a good looking model.
edit:
I take that back. I put a space in 3ds max and the curve went up.
