I have made a character using standard primitives and grouped the legs torso arms and head together(using the group tool), i have then made a biped and then put the limbs fingers and suhc in their corresponding areas and fitted it perfectly inside the mesh, I then go to modifier panel after selecting my mesh and click physic and click attach to node but as soon as i click the attach to node button and release the mouse it automatically deselects the attach to node button did i do something wrong in the modeling stage? or somewhere else please help as this is for an assignment

Don't think it would be a modeling problem. Go to your max help file and type in "physique rollout"

There's some prety detailed instructions there, so follow the process outlined there and see if it works.

Its probably happening because you've grouped the objects. grouping is really only good for static objects like maybe a huge spaceship with lots of objects and lights. groups can cause weird transform issues if you are using modifiers or scaling the groups. Instead try attaching all the pieces using editable poly ie: choose one object convert to editable poly and turn on the attach button, then select all the other objects. then apply your physique or skin modifier.

I don't do much in the way of character modeling but I remember having the same problem some time ago. "Physic" doesn't like it when geometry passes through bones.

For example you have a cylinder as an upper thigh and a sphere for the knee. The flat part of the cylinder is passing through the bone, and part of sphere is passing though the bone.
As Tyson said, attach the parts and make it one mesh, you need to surround the bone, and delete the pols that cross the bones.

I hope this makes sense...
