When I put a bitmap on the diffuse layer and apply it to a selection that is vertical then the texture becomes stretched but not if I apply it to the top of an object. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I also have a texture which I want to be able to move about on the object until it's the way I want it, is it possible to essentially use the gizmo to move a texture on a face?

I'm also using 3ds Max 2008 since my uni wont pay for an upgrade grin.gif

Yes it is.

Use the UVW Map modifier, then expand it on the stack and click the gizmo. You might also want to try the "fit to bitmap" button.
