using 3ds max or gmax, how can i make an object move, stop it and then move it again? i don't see any options to end one animation of an object and then start another.

I hope i'm clear! wink.gif

To stop an animation all you need is to have 2 keyframes in a row that place the object in exactly the same position. The position of the keys in the timeframe will depend on how long you want the object to stop moving for. You'll also have to make sure that your track view looks something like the image below with a linear transition between the 2 keys where the object is at rest.

That's the dope sheet, can you show the curve editor? Click that wiggly graph button at the top of the window.

the curve editor is blank. it's completely empty.

That means you don't have any animation, or you haven't selected the animated object when you've opened up the track view.

ok. after talking with someone for a long time, i figured out how to view and edit curves! now my problem is editing curves properly. i'm having trouble editing the Z curve on the barrels so that they rise at the same speed as the turret body, while staying at the right height.

right click on the curve point you should get a little window like this (see image)

1. you can set the exact frame and position manually

2. click on the curve type

3. select the top one, this is a linear curve (nice oxymoron)

This may allow you to be a bit more precise. Then once you have them synced up try some different curves to make it appear more natural.
