Hi,
I am not really sure if this is a normals problem or what exactly is happening. I have been modeling an exact representation of a prop pumpkin for a short film. I just booleen the top of the pumpkin where the lid is to match the prop. After I boolean out the top around the border where the cut was made the texture gets messed up certain places. (It looks like its lit uncorrectly or something.) I tried to modifiy this with an edit normals modifier and was having some luck but it is taking forever and not comping out perfect. I'm not sure what the problem is or what the correct way to fix it is. I am getting twords my deadline and would appreciate any help. If you need me to email you a picture or anything just let me know.
Thanks so much!,
Tom

If you are using the built in boolean functions of max, chances are you will get geometry artifacs.

There is an extension called ProBooleans which does a better job of booleans.

I just tried re-doing it with the Proboolean in 3dsmax 9 with no luck. I was hoping though! I still have this either weird smoothing or something going on around the edge. If you take a sphere and boolean a cylinder inthe top half you should be able to recreate a sinple version of my problem. Zoom in and render you should see it. It will look like the edge polygons not blended the same as the rest.

Forgott to mention thanks for the reply. Is the ProBoolean in 3DSmax 9 the one you are refereing too?

This is the result I get, doesn't seem to be anything wrong to me?

Hmm, Maybe I should post a pic. How did you attach that image to your post?

Ok there it goes nice. I didn't see the image button. I only saw the edit. Thanks

So the as you can see the edge is the problem. basicaly looks like the polygons where the edge of the 2 Boolean partners meet and for that matter its only some of them. The other side of the pumpkin looks fine.

Thats because I just upgraded your account and gave you the image button wink.gif

Do you mean this part of the edge?

And can I please see the mesh?

Hi, +VarnishedOtter exactly I probaly should have circled it. I will also post a few pics of the mesh in a few min. They are not the best pics but let know if you want to see a better angle or something more specificaly. Thanks Again

(In the image of the body of the pumpkin mesh I separated out the Inner and outter wall and the rim around the top into Yellow, Red, and Blue to make it easier to see.)

Just as a note it did the same thing on the top half in pretty much the same areas. I'll post a couple pics of this as well.

It looks like it may be because you have some irregular polys around the edge there. Try cleaning them up into quads and see if that helps.

I have been welding vertices together and it seems to be cleaning up a majority of the problem areas. In the case of the Lid, if you look at the wire picture what is the best way of getting rid of some of the unwanted edges? Is there a nifty way of just removing edges without having to rebuild the faces afterwards? I have been just moving the vertices over each other and then welding them to remove un wanted irregular edges. It has some what works however my texture is getting a little messed up. I may have to re-textporter it and reapply the map. Thanks

You can use the backspace button to remove unwanted faces. If that doesn't work you'll have to delete and rebuild.

Well thanks for the help. I managed to fix it up pretty well. But as I've learned the 3Ds max Boolean tool isn't the best. Live and learn.

As a quick second question does anyone have any advice on how to make a texture look waxy like the skin of a pumpkin. I have been playing with the material editor and have been getting close but i'm not quite there.

Thanks, Tom

Try painting a spec map? To shiny up the bits that stick out.

Keep us posted.

The best way would be to take photos of the skin of a pumpkin and and stick that on it (after a little bit of maipulation of course). How good are you with photoshop?
