Ready for a 3ds max complete "noob" question?

I am assembling a model, from separate pieces which were textured separately.

In trueSpace this was a breeze but I am missing something in max. When I use "compound-connect" I do not think I am making the appropriate material id to material selection. Everything appears fine after but when I exit max, restart and re load my scene, the complete model assumes one material instead of the separate materials used on the individual pieces before connecting.

I am sure this is a cheesy oversight. I just need to be steered in the right direction. Am I making an incorrect selection or is there a better way of assembly?

Thanks.

Well I think I jumped the gun on the "noob" question. I tried Boolean union and this appears to be an effective method.

Is this the proper way to assemble a model from separate pieces?

Thanks again and please pardon my 3ds max ignorance.

Can I see a screenshot?

My theory is if you can get away with leaving it separate objects, leave it. Because its a hell of a lot easier to texture and work with. And then just Group them if you must.

If they need to be joined I would probably convert to Edit Poly and use Bridge, then you would need to assign different material IDs to the faces and use a multi/sub material.

Thanks Matt. After an hour or so I realized that Edit Poly was the way to go. I was putting together a chair and needed it assembled for movement and placement in the scene.

I basically jumped the gun so to speak on asking for advice. I should have played around for a while before posting. My bad.

I will post my progress in about a week in the 3d wips section to get some constructive criticism. I need to break my trueSpace habits.
