I was just wondering if anyone knew off hand if you can open max or maya files created in the 64bit version in the 32 bit version of the same software.
that is can you open a maya 2010 64bit file in maya 2010 32 bit? ive tried opening files in older versions and there are obviously issues there but Ive not actually ever bothered to install both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of the same software. I have to go back to using XP soon at work because of some brain dead exec in the Japan HQ deciding everyone needs to be on the same page for security reasons. never did it occur to him that upgrading to windows 7 is probably a significant step toward better security.

It should work, because 32 bit and 64 create the same files, it has just got to do with how the program works on your computer. It works with studio max as I have 64 bit at home and a friend has 32 bit and had no trouble opening my file, saying that I wasn't present when he opened it, so this isnt 100%
It is ok, I wouldn't talk to me either...

Yeah I figured that the scene files should be the same data unlike when you try to open a file from a newer version of the software, cheers for that.

Yep, it can be done, I do it regularly with maya. I've done it successfully with Max before as well though I do seem to remember running into some problems with particle flow. From memory stuff I'd done at home on a 32 bit machine would crash Max on the 64 bit machines. Not entirely sure if this was an issue between 32 and 64 bit though.
