For my final year project at uni I have to create something big as a main project. We can choose ideas from a project "bank" or make up our own. We've been given example ideas including:

Using iStories multimedia storytelling software in a primary school
Developing an online video search application
Making podcasts for the Leicester Comedy Festival
Integrating several web services from Flickr and Google to create a visual route planner
Capturing spatial sound to be used with stereoscopic 3D video
Developing innovative forms of television advertising
Making a stop motion DVD for educating young people about climate change
Producing a magazine about high definition photography

3D modelling and animation is the module I got the best results in this year (81%!) so obviously I'm thinking about doing something related to this. Any ideas?

Currently I was thinking about making a 3D environment which the user can walk around in, with a stereo sound which changes depending where they are... however I think thats going to be way too difficult with my skills/knowledge so I would probably just have to make an animation of the environment, with a surround sound mix added later.. What do you think?

I think I'm good at animating but my modelling isnt very good at being realistic yet so I'm hoping to do something cartoony/unrealistic looking but I dont know what. I really need some ideas as my mind is completely blank at the minute static.gif

I just had one idea, to make a 3D model of the university Students Union building, then make an interactive guided tour. Using Director or Flash to make a menu system shouldnt be too difficult, then it should just be navigated via buttons which link to videos moving around the building, and the user can choose where they "walk" (if that makes any sense?)..

Can you use something like the unreal engine?

Not sure really. We havent really been given a specification as the whole project is meant to be managed by us individually. So I could use it if I needed to..

Can you make an ad for the school or something? Wouldn't require too much advanced modeliing, maybe just some good animation and effects.

Yeah we can do anything but it needs to be quite big/advanced as its our big end of uni project, needs to be pretty complex. I think I'm going to learn how to use after effects properly so I can incorporate that somehow as well.

maybe something involving stereoscopy. thats pretty current hip at the moment. If you could get access to the right type of gear (ie: projector) you could do a kind of installation where the viewers are taken on some sort of 3d mind warping thrillride. flying through caves and vistas or something?

hmm that sounds interesting... I have no idea how I would even begin to approach such a thing though, any ideas? IE would you make the whole "world" for the ride in 3dsmax or whatever then move the camera through it then add any effects in AE, or some other idea I havent thought of?

well, you could build various scenes to flythrough in max, or create a kind of post modern weird surrealist edit using a variety of media. even a 2d projection in a dark room would be quite immersive if you made the cameras fly through scenes in a nice fluid way. rendering things for stereoscopic 3d is quite a challenge. you have to render everything twice from two cameras and combine the images into one image. there would be alot of trial and error and you would obviously need to have access to the right hardware to project and view the images.
