Hi all, I'm new here and rather new in the subject in question.

First Render Style...

I'm trying to know how to render my scene so that my characters (and possible everything else) looks as though they are made of cardboard. Not to realistic of course. I'm a person who loves cell-shade and cartoon types of renders.

Does anyone know any tutorials on how I can achieve this? I'm sorry to say I can't find an example on the net, but there was a commercial in Australia regarding a bank where the entire world (in the commercial) looks as though everything was made of cardboard.

Second Normal Mapping...

During class, I was creating some small details on my character when my friend mentioned I should use Normal Mapping instead.

What exactly is Normal Mapping and where can I find a tutorial regarding Normal Mapping?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys

Regards
JHawks

Firstly, normal mapping is a method of projecting high detail displacement maps onto low detail models. It's mainly used in games as a method of enabling high detailed game assets without the high poly counts. The tute that Scott posted above looks pretty good.

As for the cardboard, you'd have to use a combination of modelling and animating your characters to look like they're made of cardboard and having a good cardbord like material to stick on them. Unfortunately there are no cool cardboard plugins that I know of.

You could however look up toon shaders to get some toon/cell shading plugins. I dont know of any off the top of my head, I've never really done much toon shading.

Thanks for the link Scott ^^

Yeah I'm sorry I can't find an example of the cardboard style that I'm looking for. Steve Martin makes a good point about using a combination of modeling and animation to achieve the cardboard affect... I'll try that. It's not 100% what I'm looking for, but it's sure up there XD.gif

I'll work on that Normal Mapping. Thanks again guys ^^

That tutorial was great, but I still need to practice more. Still can't get my head around the concept of a normal map and the process of creating one.

It basically is projecting the high poly version of a mesh onto the low poly version. So the high poly version only exists for the textures right? So the low poly version is what you see and rig and animate right?

Can someone sort of... simplify the process of creating a normal map?

I mean like to texture, basically you unwrap the object onto a 2D surface, draw on it and whatever is drawn on it will appear on the corresponding part of the 3D surface.

You can't really do it that way, a normal map has to be calculated by a computer. There is a program called Zbrush that does something similar though you don't draw the detail onto a flat surface, you draw it onto a 3d model. It's a bit like sculpting.

Yeah I know ZBrush, that is such an awesome programme. My friend is pro at it and his works are mind-blowing. You guys should check out his deviant art under the name rixx.
