Is there a way to retrosave in MAX? I need to open a 2008 .max in an older version.

Don't think so, you'll have to export if possible.

Is there a file type that will keep animation and materials as well as geometry when exported?

You can export animation in .fbx format.
But you may have to rebuild the materials.
You could try saving a material library file from the material editor and load it into max 8.
I havent tried it myself but maybe?? I only have max 9 running so I can't test my theory.
