Hey, ok before i ask the question. ive been working with varouis 3d programs over the years like animation master mostly. and ive recently started using 3d max. So im not a complete beginner at this stuff. But i am still trying to learn(im more of a movie effects artist if anything). Now on to the real thing ive been trying to rig This model i found for free of the web. I want to know A couple of things.

1. Whats the best way i should rig him.( i will be using Mocap for most of his stuff)
2.Any good tutorial on how to make his cloths animate like cloths and stay on him.
3.any thing else you think that would help him feel a bit more real.

Ps . Im using this model for some short films and stuff, that i will not be using for anything else except for the fact of learning.

Thank you guys so much im really glad to be apart of this community
Best Regards,
Brent

Are the clothes independent of the body?
For the face, learn morph targets.
If you're going to use motion capture learn the curve editor like the back of your hand.

With the cloths separate you can use something called reactor. You can also use something called "cloth" in the modifier stack.

If you are going to use mocap files the fastest way to rig him would be with character studio. but bear in mind that character studio sucks arse for hand animation.
For doing fabric simulations the most effect way I've found is using max cloth and setting up groups so that only the extremities get simulated. for example if you had a tshirt you would sim it relaxing onto the character then use skin wrap to make it follow the characters skin. then set up a group in the cloth that selects the main areas of the t-shirt fading out to the extremities. make it a preserve node that will keep the motion from the underlying modifier and simulate cloth everywhere else. This way works well but is still alot of work for every shot. sometimes a simple flex modifier will do for a stylised cloth effect.

And as far as bones go...
If you're hard core, blast thew the manual for character studio. (the biped thing)

Ive never used motion builder but I've heard its really awesome. especially for studios that need a solid animation pipeline where they can swap and re-use animation resources for multiple episodes, projects, characters, etc..

Yeh, I've heard it's good. Plus it's an autodesk product (like everything these days) so hopefully it would be fairly compatible with max and maya etc.

ok guys, ive now wasted at least 10+ hours trying to rig this model of link. Here is a link to the file for if anyone else wants to see what i did wrong on rigging it and so on. If you could fix it to that would be awsome. Also i dont care if you guys completly get rid of the bi-ped bones and rig it with your own bone system.

Awsome job on the rigg!

Few things..

Right hand has a loose vertex in a finger that is not parented to anything.

Left hand same thing but in the fore arm close to the elbow.. i think its a glove vertex.

Left leg has the cloth not deforming with the rigg, yet the right one is.. I dont know if you're going to use cloth deformation or not.

Other than that.. I think you're good to go! Great job!

That looks great! Im guessing your cloth is not attached to the biped yet? Cold be because I dont have all the skins you have.. I had a error saying the skins were missing. Where did you get these from? I like the detail!

What all are your trying to move? The clothing and biped? You might have to use unfreeze all with the right click, then ctrl a for select all and then move?
