What are you trying to say:

1)While I use editable polly the "show end result toggle" will not stay pressed.

2) While in editable poly mode I press "show end result toggle." But when I click on another item in the modifier stack, like 'Meshsmooth', "show end result toggle" becomes unpressed.

Does it become unpressed no matter what you do or when you're in a specific mode? If not what function seems to cause it?

Sounds like an error. It works for me with both meshsmooth and turbosmooth.
Try merging the mesh into a new scene and use a new edit poly mod.

It becomes unpressed as soon as I press it. That is, if I click and hold it stays pressed.
It' doesn't matter what mode.

Close max.
delete "3dsmax.exe.config" in your max directory.
Open max.
Test bug.

Reason:
I'm wondering if there's a shortcut command or UI option that's been added [somehow] that's keeping it on. Deleting the file will be the fastest way to reset your settings. I guess I should have asked earlier, if this is a new problem.

Yes it's a new problem I've reset Max and created a box, applied meshsmooth,
Same problem.

Unplug your keyboard and see if the problem continues. There shouldn't be a reason to restart max for this test.

I gave my keyboard a whack or two, that fixed it. The left control key stopped working a couple of weeks ago and it has done some other funny stuff.
