Hey all.
I have made a sofa in 3d studio max.
The model is made completly with boxes so all edges on the sofa are sharp. Now how do i smooth the edges so it acctually looks like a soft sofa?

put a turbosmooth modifier on them. You will probably want to add some edges in so it doesnt smooth it too much. chamfer or extrude edge should do the trick.

Yeh, chamfer the hard edges a little bit so they keep their shape. Otherwise it'll look crap when you add the turbosmooth.

Well, it all depends on what you're using it for. If it's product rendering than use turbosmooth, if it's game content than just chamfer the edges once (or just leave it alone, with a decent texture and a normal map anything looks good and smooth) If you're going to use Turbosmooth make sure everything is quad or you'll get some freaky things.

If you are using it for gaming, and importing it into an engine that doesn't support turbosmooth (like TGE, last time i checked), then you can use the auto smooth feature. Select all polygons, then go over to the polygon smothing groups under your polygon modifier panel and turn the number next to the autosmoth button up as far as you like. Other then that camfer and turbosmooth/mesh smooth are your best bets.
