these are my first 3d models ever, i began with modeling the big motherships (the ones with the windows) basically by trial and error, to find out abit what the program can do. after that i thought it was real fun to model, and i made the fighters and the larger bomber/fighters. i still have to add fire from the engines, but i dont know how to do that yet tongue.gif. if you have any tips or suggestions, please feel free to share them.

so this is your first attempt at 3d? well done, it beats the killer park bench i made way back. now for some crits. correct me if i'm wrong but a lot of the detail on the ships is in the texture? because they look very low poly like they belong in a video game or something. As its just a still image you can go crazy and model all those edges and panels.
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Yep definitly model the details, you dont have to stick to low poly, unless you're rendering in realtime, or have a PC from 1982.

Great work though. Its coming along.

You could try adding the fire with volumetrics, or some kind of procedural material on a group of spheres.

What programs did you use to make this?

Nothing much to add past what the guys have said above. I am sure that once you have some fire and additional effects you will be able to have additional light sources and some areas of dynamicism
Like this giant fish in a bear suit. He would be horrible. Look at him go!!

Good work man. I would recommend modeling the planet. There are some really high res NASA images online. All you have to do is map it to a sphere and use subtle displacement and you have a pretty darn realistic looking planet. Other than that I would just give the models a bit more detail and make use of the turbo smooth modifier in max. Looking forward to updates.

these guys have some nice textures I would recommend you use the cloud map ...

It's starting to look good dude. The fighters seem a little shiny to me. Try putting a texture in your specular slot. This will break it up a lot and add more realism.

You have inspired me to do some space stuff now.

Yeh, it's coming along pretty well. Much better than my first attempt at 3d. I'd add a bit of motion blur to the fighters though, give em a sense of speed.

Are they animated or just still? If they are animated there's a motion blur render effect you can use. In the effects tab under the render menu and click Add and select motion blur. You'll also have to right click each individual object and go to properties and in the motion blur area make sure it's enabled and select the image button. Then just hit render.
If you don't want to animate them, render out your ships in a separate pass from the background and you can blur them manually in photoshop or some other similar program.
