hi guys. ive been trying all night but i cant get surfaces to cover the splines ive made correctly.. here is what i have:

no idea what i need to do to make surfaces to work on it. i heard i need to make sure its all connected up and that the splines are all closed with 4 corners..? whats the easiest way of doing this with what i already have..?

as a beginner I am loathe to advise anyone, but I just did a spline cage tutorial and your model doesnt fit the requirements at all: everyone of those vertices that doesnt have a line coming off it (like around the wheel wells) will not surface. also, the entire shape must be in regions of 3 or 4 sides only. I can see various spots where this is not the case. The bottom of the bumper alone accounts for at least 8 sides on a single face. Once you make this all work, you will have to set the threshold appropriate as the default surface value usually doesnt pick up enough detail.

If you're serious about modeling using splines you MUST have the rule of 3 and 4 in your head at all times. All the vertexes must be within a certain threshold AND MAKE A TRIANGLE OR A QUAD (square). *view attached image.

On the other hand (what i would do here) is use the lines as a reference to start modeling from. It's much easier to start modeling in editable poly if you have splines set up for reference.

thanks for the response. i wanted to use some other method of modeling though, thats why i tried splines but clearly failed.

What's wrong with simply adding more splines to make squares and triangles?
If the Surface modifier isn't working at all, increase the threshold, because your model might be too big.

Tip: Have snap turned on.

thats what i have been trying since after my post, but i cant get it right,. i cant explain it but when i connect the dots up i get parts that are higher/lower than they should be. ive been working on the front for a while and i just cant fix it:

splines:

i will try again with the snapping thing.

edit: no idea how the snaps is supposed to help? (its the magnet with the little 3 next to it isnt it? doesnt really do anything to help add the extra splines

Turn your "steps" down and use meshsmooth to get that smooth look all the cool kids have. Your other option is to spend more time on getting your anchors to look better. The first one is easier. Do that.
GO LIKE THIS:
>meshsmooth
>surface
>line

As for knowing how the snap tool helps, it snaps when you draw. disbelief.gif It's handy for everyone who's vertexes always need to be close to each other. Fuse is another good tool for collapsing points into one.

now I see the problem. See those yellow and white vertices that are close together but not quite lined up on the bumper? select both vertices and choose FUSE or WELD I forget, fuse I think tho. Whatever it is they wont join together (can only have two lines through 1 vertex) but they will "snap together" to the exact same coordinates so the spline can complete.

no, not the problem. ive already fused what needs to be fused smile.gif there are a few splines i didnt want to fuse and i left them seperate on purpose

im working on some stuff now with it. one question which is still sort of on topic; lets say i created a box with the spline tool, but didnt make any curves while placing the box (i clicked once to drop the dot, not click and drag). how do i show the handles when i do that? the handles are not visible because there is no curve..i would like to create a curve tho. i cant find the handles
