Anyone thought of doing it? It's been in the back of my mind for a while, but lately it's been moving forward. Especially when you see some of the crap ads on TV. (Jimbo anyone?) I mean, there's a company out there making money off this shite, and I'm busting my arse moving furniture around? Doesn't seem right. What's holding me back is that I wouldn't know where to fit into the market, how to promote myself, or what people are willing to pay for this stuff.
mmmm
people would probably buy stupid stuff because the ads made it look cool or really interseting and they don't bother to do research and learn more about the product before they buy it. so like yea. i dunno
if you're going to make a business, just make sure your product is interesting and you have really good ads and that's a start
What I meant in that last post was that there is a lot of crap cg in TV ads at the moment and I think I can do better., hence me thinking about starting my own cg company. You are right though, the product is important. It's not just a matter of starting up a business and having people flock to it. Research is needed to find where there is a nice little hole in the market that needs filling.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
essencially you are your own buisness when you work as a contractor. You have an abn and have to do activity statements etc... Setting up a studio is what your talking about and that is more an issue of do you have a spare 50,000 to buy machines and pay wages etc... What I said in my post about matts reel regarding approaching companies that want 3d done as a freelance animator is probably the most realistic way to kick things off.
I think most of the crap we see on tv is done at break neck speed for almost no cash.
I hope you're right. I shudder to think that people are paying good money for that crap.
As far as the business goes, I was actually thinking a bit bigger than contract work (not much though). I haven't given it a great deal of thought, but I'm getting a bit sick of sending out my reel and waiting for something to happen. I figured it's about time I actually made some positive steps to try and make something happen. It's not something I wanna rush into though. So I'll keep doing the crappy freelance jobs and furniture removals while I plot my world domination... mwahahahaha![Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Yea I have been working as a programmer for over 3 months now, I planned to do 3d but I needed work and now i have no time to develop my skills. Recently me and Matt have been messing around with C++ and OpenGL. We are currently trying to make a simple beat em up. I'm doing 3d and he is doing C. We are both very uninspired by our current job and we are looking at moving into the games industry. Seen as everyone is feeling a bit low and the chances of decent work seem far away I figured i would just throw and idea into the mix.
We are thinking about starting a games company, Obviously this is incredibly difficult and we have no money but we figured that maybe some of the people on these boards might be interested in working on a few projects. Essentially we would just work on stuff in our spare time and see where it goes from there. We need an animators modelers and texture artists. If anyone is interested let us know.
Definately interested. I think that there's enough good talent on this board to give it a crack. If the talent keen that is...[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Modelling/texturing/lighting are my strongest skills. Prop or asset modelling really, I haven't done a lot of character modelling. The games industry is probably a good one to be getting into. It's bigger than the movie industry (money wise) and seems to be growing. It doesn't get any government help like the movie industry does though. It would be nice to get some help from the SA gov to give the industry here a bit of a kick start.
But that is about to change. I saw a thing on the news about it and how the games industry is trying to get funding from the govt. Also SA is putting like 2 billion into the arts or some crazy figure like that.
Modeling and texturing it is then. We don't need lighting because thats all done in real time. Shame because I love lighting.
As for how serious we are ... i am very serious I can not speak for Matt.
I'm sure you can do something. If you post some of your work then i can judge what kind of level you are at and give you tasks accordingly? Interested? Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
sounds like fun, when you get into the swing of it you can throw a few modelling texturing or animation tasks my way. These days I have quite a bit of time to spend on such endeavours.
Sure dude! No probs man. In the next few weeks im gonna try to get organized and setup a board on these forums for people interested so we can bash together some ideas and give people jobs etc. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Yea man ill get it going pretty soon. Things have been a bit mad this week. Ill talk to Matt today and maybe we can get something going over the weekend. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Well, at the moment I'm doing some tv idents for a sports channel very simple and sporadic. I'm working on the showreel too. I'm getting by, but I need a proper gig pretty soon I've been trying to find something more interesting than architectural visualisation but I'm also kindof lasy so I havent been beating down the doors at all the studios in town. I'll post my reel soon, its not exactly awe inspiring but I'm hoping it gets me some work.
