So I was wondering what people's thoughts are on stereoscopic 3d. It seems to be the next big thing in movies and TV and it's creeping into the games industry as well. I work for a company who does quite a bit of stereoscopic work but I've never actually seen any movies or anything in 3d (other than what we've worked on). Personally I think it's got it's place but I'm a long way off getting a 3d TV as faked 3d usually looks terrible and is more likely to take away from the experience of watching something rather than add anything to it. And the fact that you have to wear crappy glasses (none of them seem to fit my head right) is also another negative point. I briefly played the demo of Avatar in 3d and it looked quite cool, but again, I'm not sure if it added anything to the game. I'm not sure if the process for making games in stereoscopic 3d is much different to making games normally, but if it is, well that's just another area that game companies are going to invest time and money into rather than the important areas like story, gameplay and making sure the bloody thing doesn't crash every 5 minutes.

If it's done right I think 3d can be great but at the moment there's too much fake crap out there which is going to do more harm to the industry than good.

Thoughts?

I'm not a fan of 3D, saw the new toy story in 3D and it just gave me a headache! Not to mention the glasses hurt my ears! It didn't add anything to the movie and really was a distraction more than anything else. During the sadder moments of the film your watching it thinking "such a touching moment like these seems wrong in 3D". I am honestly waiting for holographic TV (I was reading about a company that is really pushing for this, it is possible we might have it within 5 years), but the non glasses 3D I think will be where the TVs become more popular! (I cant wait to see what the 3DS has to offer)
It is ok, I wouldn't talk to me either...

yeah, I kind of have this evil hope that it fails extremely badly so that.
a) film studios will spend more on making thier films better instead of shooting/rendering them stereoscopically
b) so that they will go back and develop REAL 3d technology like holography or VR sooner.
c) just because its so clearly an attempt to get people back into theatres and not the revolution its cracked up to be.

but in the case of some very good examples such as avatar it was kind of a nice novelty. I was actually very impressed with the 3d effect in avatar but after seeing 4 or 5 films in 3d I'm tending to think i'd rather just catch the 2d version.

I also would like to reserve judgment on 3d games until I try the powered shutter glasses method. apparently its a significantly better experience compared to the 3d effect you see in theatres.

Yeh, Avatar looked good because it was actaully shot in 3d whereas most (all?) of the other "3d" movies going around are shot in2d and converted to 3d in post. It still a very expensive setup and even when you shoot with 3d cameras there's still a lot of extra post work to do so I can't see a lot of true 3d movies being made in the near future.

I am yet to see a live action film that has been shot with stereo cameras so its hard to say if it looks good when its done well. I think the latest harry potter may have been shot that way.

so far all the animated films ive seen in 3d have been pretty good. usually the best examples are those that use the effect subtly. pixars UP
was like that. but even in the very best examples its not so incredible that you just have to see it that way. personally I think the introduction of digital theatres was more revolutionary. and probably the most impressive thing ive seen at the cinema was the special addition of blade runner running on the 4K digital projector in the Orpheum cinema in Sydney, seeing that much detail was something extremely impressive, like the difference between a dvd and a blue ray but as big as a house. I just think that when it comes down to it the language of film has been established in 2d. everything works on a 2d plane, pulling focus framing and depth of field, making everything 3d is kind of saying that sculpture is superior to painting on a canvas.
