I have a coffee table which I constructed in Rhino and have imported it into 3DS. I would like to render it, but I am having troubles.
The way that I was taught how to render was to to place a 'plane' underneath your object, add 'matte/shadow' as a material to the plane. Add the material you wanted for the object/piece (the floor would then be white). Then add a skylight and activate it in 'advanced lighting' as a 'light tracer' . Tweak what I needed in there, such as 'bounces'. And voila. But I am not getting what I want.

The background should no be black but it should be a never-ending white, and there should be a shadow around the coffee table.
Whilst we are on the topic, can someone link me or tell me a step by step guide on how to add your own materials into the library, I totally forgot like a plonker. I want the legs to be birch and the lipping area to have a plywood effect. Cheers for any help.

Update: I got this when I set 'Environment' 'Background' to white.

Rendering -> Environment, set the environment to white. That should make your background white.

Why are you using matte/shadow material? are you compositing into a photo or something? maybe you havent checked shadows in the matte shadow material?. try using a standard material on the plane so you can see the shadows properly. your lights seem very bright too. I would suggest applying a standard grey material to everything until you get your lighting and shadows right then mess with materials.

Well now I have shadows, but it's way to bright, and not to sure how to make it slightly darker. And how do I add my own materials again?

Update: I've figured out how to add my own material, and I have the Birch. But when I try and add it to the surface it doesn't apply it. I added the material using bitmap in material editor.

the skylight in max could be too bright or maybe the environment is reflecting the light too much. I would have to check, I havent used max skylight for ages. I would use a standard spot light as well and just use the skylight for a GI effect so you can get some directional shadows. use area shadows for nice blurry shadows on your spotlight. for material assignment. select the object at hit the assign material to selection button. or drag it onto the object from the material editor.

So this is what I got. Why it goes all ghost like I have no idea.

Update: When I import it to 3DS from rhino, I seem to lose surfaces. Which is strange because I make sure all visible edges/sides have a surface. I can e-mail the exported file if you want to see what's wrong.

Here is a printscreen, maybe explains the situation a little bit better.

Thats really weird. You dont have opacity set for the wood material as well as the glass do you?

No, I have made sure that only the glass material has any opacity. I even tried importing the drawing without the glass on top, just the 4 legs, and still wrong. You know, I would make this model in 3ds, but I find 3ds so strange and complicated to use to build that I only use it for it's rendering properties. I tried to draw a line which was 400mm, I failed miserably, that's how bad I am at 3ds drawing.

I guess all programs do things a little bit differently which may seem strange at first. What format are you exporting out of rhino/into max?

I did this in Rhino, and had no problems with the surfaces. Strange.

You know what, I am the biggest berk in the world. After many experiments, I have solved my problem. What was happening, was that when I was applying the material, it was applying it on the other side of the surface. That is why you couldn't see the material. So all I had to do was flip the material. And after having plenty of talks with fellow classmates, we have decided to lose the glass and use use another material. That will be left as a surprise for next time. Thanks for all the help. Plenty of useful tips and it's nice to see that you guys cared about my problem.
