This is my first attempt at box modeling a vehicle. Please share you opinions and offer any suggestions.

Looks good so far. Are you finding it easy? I'm modelling a car at the moment and having a bit of trouble with small dents and things not quite lining up as they should. Getting everything to have a nice smooth curved look is pretty difficult.

My problem I'm running into, it that I don't really know where to go from here. I loosing something in the understanding of when you are supposed to "DETACH" elements such as, (Hood, doors, grill, etc). I need to search some more tutorials on the up dated versions of max. Most of the ones that I have come across are from older versions, which still reference modeling half of your object and using the "Mirror" instance and then welding the verts, instead of just using symmetry.

Thanks for your kind words guys. I hope to have more done tomorrow.

I've found it to be one of the most difficult objects I've ever modelled. I did a quick render with a reflective material and it looked like the car had been pelted with hailstones in some parts. I've spent the past week (not everyday) just tidying things up. It's a slow process.

I've been following this tutorial and found it to be pretty good:

I've been practicing my car modeling techniques on modeling my work laptop. I'm using the same box modeling techniques with detaching different items. I am finding that this is a great model to practice on.

Ok, I detached the rest of the doors and windows, put on some mud flap, part of the undercarriage and now I'm playing with some textures. This is the first of many models need to accomplish making my dad a music video out of a song that I re-wrote for him a few years ago, but I have until Christmas to finish. Wish me luck!!!!

I just used Mental Ray Painter for now. Thanks for your comments. I'm wondering, is there any way to export or open a 2008 file in version 9. I have some old plugin's for 9 that I want to use in my video, but after modeling this truck in 2008 I can't seem to get it into version 9. Any suggestions?

Nevermind. I think I've figured it out. You can export out of Max 2008 an import into another version. The catch is that the face count can only be so high to export. Now the question would be.... What is the maximum face count that you can export?

As far as I know, there is no limit. I could be wrong though. How many polys you got?

Welcome bluerabbit....

Tyson, .OBJ did work a lot better than just exporting it as a .3DS file.
I hadn't worked on the truck for a few days, so I made these changes last night:

* Added rear bumper and trailer hitch
* Added tail lights
* Added tail gate handle
* Added glass to mirrors
* Added vent section

Last things remaining are:
* Add Tires
* Exhaust
* Wind Shield Wipers
* License Plates
* Adjust paint job and textures

Ok, same links above.

Tire's are added, but it looks like I will need to fill the hole with brake rotors. I also add head lights, but I'm not real happy with those at this point.

It looks great! How have you done the inside of the headlights there? Are there textures involved?

By the way, I hit the max polys for .3ds file the other day. Its 64,000 polys.

Tried to export a massive mesh into my game engine, got it to just below 64K and the engine still runs at full speed.

64000 isn't really that many - I could quite easily pass that for a single model. I guess it's different when you're making a game asset. Good to see the game's still coming along. Was it the mothership?

That one's gone on hold for the moment. Jamie and I are in the middle of building a 3d engine for a 3rd person rpg.
