So, I made a Scene, and textured some objects, but I have made something I doN't know, so I can't use any textures now, the old ones I dragged from my Pictures folder are still one the objects, but I can't assign new textures!
Please Help, and thank you.

octo.gif Changing your rendering options, from MentalRay to Scanline, can have an effect on your materials.
octo.gif If your material editor isn't showing what materials you have in your scene you might have to use the eyedropper tool, in the material editor, to bring it into the editor.

So, I don't know if you need a screenshot, but I think that the fiel is more helpful, so just download and please tell me if you could fix it.
Thank you, I hope you can do this, it's very important.

Well I downloaded the scene, it all seems pretty normal to me. I can load textures into materials and assign them just fine.
either you have a weird crash happening in max which usually goes away with a reboot. or you are doing something wrong yourself.
how exactly are you trying to apply new textures? did you intend to use mental ray? mental ray is pretty complex so its understandable if its thrown you off if you switched to it by mistake.

Well, I just dragged the picture in my folder and tried to put it on an object. I doN't know how to turn smthng on/off in mental ray...
I'm pretty new to 3ds max, and I doN't know anything about mental ray, or Vray.
I only know how to modify, or how to make IK connections, so mybe I turned this mental ray something.
If I did, how can I Turn it back?
Thanks.

I downloaded it myself from mediafire, still bad. Is it possible that it's because of the file format?
I use .png-s, but I guess it's not bad, acuse it worked before...

I am pretty sure that "how to apply a material to and object" would be explained in the help file. Trying pressing F1 and have a look through those tutorials. It is a great resource for beginners. As Tyson says it seems you are missing a step in the process and without a screenshot of your material editor it is impossible for us to help you.

normaly you click on a channel in a material. say, diffuse. then go to bitmap and choose a file from your hardrive. then assign the material to the objects. Sorry If im not understanding your problem but it sounds like your skipping a step.
load an image into a material and then apply to the object. And to swap back to the scanline renderer, go to the render settings dialogue box and right at the bottom there is the assign renderer options.

But I don't use material, I just drag the file and put it on the object. I'll post a picture tomorrow, I doN't have time now.
Thanks.

Yeah in general that not a good idea.

You really need to learn how to use the material editor.

Image 1
This is where the material editor lives, or you can just press the M key.

Image 2
1. Choose an empty material slot
2. Click the Map slot on the Diffuse channel

Image 3
Choose Bitmap as the map type

Image 4
Choose your texture

Image 5
1. Click the Show Map in Viewport button, allows you to see the result in the viewport
2. Apply to selected objects

Hope this is helpful to you. You have much more control over your materials this way, because soon you will progress further than simply applying bitmap textures.

while you can drag and drop a bitmap onto an object from windows explorer whats actually happening when you do that is max loading a bitmap into the diffuse channel of a standard material. So then you have to get that material into the material editor by using the eye dropper or get material from selected option. Seriously just learn to use the program the way its supposed to be used and these types of problems will go away, plus you'll be able to start building materials with wonderfull glorious things like bump and specular. a whole new world awaits.

Thank you all. grin.gif
The truth is that I know how to use these(bumpmap), my problem is that it worked at the start, but now I open the file and can't drag the textures
on the objects. Thanks for that "show map in viewport" thing, cause I didn't know that. So I just can't do that I drag .png-s and they become texture, cause if I drag them, nothing happens. It's annoying because as I said it worked fine when I started making it, and still works in my previous scene. It's just not working on that file, and it was hard for me to reach that.
I still belive that there's only a little problem...hope I can figure out how to fix.
Thank you all, you are very kind, I hope that there will be success.
