I am attempting to open up a 3Ds Max Scene File which I began creating in 3Ds max 08 and then carried on working on in an 3Ds max 9 trial version. I have come back to open the latest file in 3Ds max 9 and it says File Open Failed. I had the file stored as an archive and several other 3Ds max scene files. I don't have access to the autoback files any more as I created it on another hard drive which i've re-formatted since. I noticed that some of my earlier files which i created in 3Ds max 8 still open in that application but any after that I did in 09 don't work.

Is there anyway to restore an archive/3ds max scene file?

Have to get this straight first.

The max versions go like this:

max 6
max 7
max 8
max 9
max 2008
max 2009

max 8 is not the same as max 2008, same with max 9 and 2009.

So if you went from 8 to 2009 trial, then back to 9, it wouldnt work because the files are not backwards compatible.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious for you, but we have had it happen many times before.

the only solution is to install the version which you have file of and save it as obj, thats the only option

Yeah theres really no way around it. the closest export format to saving the max scene is probably FBX but you are really looking at re-doing alot of your scene setup. Grab the max 2010 demo, they are forwards compatible. then you'll have 30 days to finish you're project wink.gif
